Change File Explorer views quickly

By Ed Bott

Every time you open a folder in File Explorer, its contents appear in one of eight predefined views designed to make it easier to work with files. Four of these views are icon-based: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. If one of those views is not quite right, hold down Ctrl and use the mouse wheel (or use the pinch gesture on a touchpad) to zoom in and out to exactly the right size.

The other four views display filenames and metadata: List, Details, Tiles, and Content. Details view is probably the single most useful, because it offers easy sorting and filtering options using column headings.

To change views, you can click View on the File Explorer ribbon and then choose from the eight options on the Layout tab. But there are two faster ways:

On the right side of the status bar at the bottom of the File Explorer window, click one of the two icons to switch to Details view or Large Icons view.

Or, if you prefer keyboard shortcuts, press Ctrl+Shift+number, where each number 1 through 8 switches to a different view. The two shortcuts worth memorizing are Ctrl+Shift+2 (Large Icons) and Ctrl+Shift+6 (Details).
