How To Defend Against  Ransomware

How To Defeat Ransomware Threat

If cybersecurity is the gift that keeps on giving, then ransomware is the threat that keeps on taking. This week our readers flocked to a CSO article about ransomware gangs using toolkits to evade the defenses of legitimate organizations - and it is easy to see why.

If the bad guys have toolkits helping them breach even the most up-to-date securities, what hope is there for the good guys? This prompted the CISOs in our audience to ask how cybersecurity companies should respond to this threat, and Smart Answers pulled together the wisdom of our many years of coverage to provide the answer.

It's not all good news: cybersecurity companies are not above paying the ransom or using third parties to negotiate. But for the most part it is doing the right things, and doing them well: patch known vulnerabilities, adopt a zero-trust approach to network security, deploy multi-factor authentication, implement network segmentation, and ensure that backup systems are secure and regularly tested.

Can AI Cut Your Cloud Bill?

If dealing with external threats wasn't enough, IT execs are also having to deal with the internal issue of rising costs. This week our CIO readers were fascinated by a piece showcasing how price increases, a rush to adopt AI, inflation, and ongoing digital modernization efforts, are driving IT leaders to revisit cloud costs

Not surprisingly, they then wanted to ask Smart Answers how to cut those costs, and specifically whether AI can help to reduce Cloud costs. The answer? Well, it can - but only when deployed correctly. Get it wrong and the compute cost of AI will add to your bill.

Identify Yourself

Alongside infrastructure costs, IT leaders must deal with a bewildering and complex array of technical issues to stay secure and current. And another popular piece this week opined that CIOs need a strategy to manage certificates and machine identities.

It caught the attention of our CIO audience who asked Smart Answers about the security implications of not adopting or poorly managing non-human identities. Smart Answers is firmly of the view that woman, man or machine: identity matters.
