| | | Trout fishing . . . would be a more attractive pastime than it is but for the popular notion of its danger. The trout is a retiring and harmless animal, except when he is aroused and forced into combat; and then his agility, fierceness, and vindictiveness become apparent. No one who has studied the excellent pictures representing men in an open boat, exposed to the assaults of long, enraged trout flying at them through the open air with open mouth, ever ventures with his rod upon the lonely lakes of the forest without a certain terror, or ever reads of the exploits of daring fishermen without a feeling of admiration for their heroism. . . . |

| | | | Q: How do you fish caddis-pupa imitations? Just like a regular nymph? βNick, St. Louis, MO (via the Ask MidCurrent form) A: Spring brings prolific caddisfly hatches on many trout rivers, and trout often feed heavily on the pupa stage. Unlike mayflies, adult caddisflies donβt linger on the waterβthey fly off almost immediatelyβso trout get most of their calories before and during the emergence, when pupae drift and struggle upward in the water column. In fact, caddis pupae can drift for hours (even miles) before finding the ideal temperature (50β55Β°F) to hatch. This makes pupae easy targets for trout over an extended period. As a result, fishing pupa imitations is often the most effective way to catch trout during a caddis hatch, especially in spring, when famous events like the Motherβs Day caddis blanket rivers in April and May. | | | | BECOMING A BETTER FLY FISHER |
| | | | | | | | | Recently Iβve been amazed by the number of flies and rigs that anglers have left hanging on streamside trees and bushes. On one stretch of water that I frequent on a weekly basis, Iβll usually see a number of hanging patterns, so I wade across the stream and cut them free. The flies are in great shape since theyβve only been there for less than seven days (since the last time I waded across and cut them from the same spot). Sure enough, there will be in the same spots the time I show up. And itβs easy to wade across and retrieve the pattern, so I canβt understand why these patterns are left to hang.
I have heard numerous fly fishers criticize spin and bait anglers for throwing trash on the ground as well as leaving large bobbers and monofilament in the trees. This garbage becomes an eye sore for the next angler travelling through, and thereβs always the possibility of a bird accidentally eating the bait or lure hanging on the tree. In that case, the tree becomes a literal βhanging tree,β where bird corpses hang. One year, I cut down four dead swallows that mistook a hanging fly for a live insect.
