Last week the amazing Tegan Taylor answered some of the biggest questions circling COVID-19. This week she shares her tips on how she stays motivated and where she wants to travel post-lockdown.
How is COVID-19 different to previous pandemics? And what have we learnt that we can apply to any future pandemics?
Two big things that have made COVID different to other pandemics – our understanding of health and medicine, which is an incredibly helpful thing, and our global interconnectedness, which has allowed it to spread way faster than previous pandemics. As for what we’ve learned, some is that the same things that have been effective in the past (like masks and social distancing, which were used in the 1918 flu pandemic) are really effective. And the new advances the pandemic has yielded are probably too numerous to list here!
Gyms are closed and it’s hard to stay motivated during a pandemic. What do you like to do to stay fit and healthy?
I’m a hiker and am lucky to live near some beautiful trails, which my dog is very happy about. I also made friends with a free interval training app and a couple of kettlebells on my deck during lockdowns. Lounge room yoga, with or without a YouTube video to guide me through, or a good old-fashioned home dance party with my kids are other faves.

If and when we are vaccinated and allowed to travel… that’s definitely one of the main things people are looking forward to. Where do you want to visit most? And, do you have any recommendations of places you’ve been to previously?
I love walking the cliffside paths on the Isle of Wight in the UK, Singapore (especially the hawkers markets with satay sticks and roti pratha) and Chiang Mai in Thailand. Looking forward to the day when I’m able to go back and hoping they’re not too different with the intervening years and pandemic after-effects.
We love Coronacast as it’s super helpful and breaks down COVID-19 news in an easy to digest way. Do you listen to any other podcasts that you love on ABC listen?
So many! I listen to The Signal most days, love The Pop Test for nerdy, laugh-out-loud science, and cannot get enough of Patient Zero (I told you I loved medical mysteries and disease outbreak stories last week). I’ll also selfishly recommend the Health Report, which Norman and I also make – each week we do a podcast-only extra where we answer listeners questions, just like on Coronacast! But you’ll never know that if you only listen to the radio version 😉 |
