It’s no secret that we here at The Old Farmer’s Almanac have a love of folklore, facts, and fun trivia. You don’t publish an Almanac for 227 years if you don’t love what you do! We are figuratively overflowing with bits of wisdom and wit gleaned over the years. (Did you know that spring moves at an average of 1.9 miles per hour?)
You can find fun facts in this year’s Almanac and throughout our calendars. But even though we publish four wall calendars and an engagement calendar, we still had so much to share that we created an Everyday Calendar. (Did you know that most lost household items are found within 18 inches of where they were supposed to be?)
The Everyday Calendar is one of six calendars that comes as part of our Old Farmer’s Almanac Calendar Club Charter Membership. But some things just didn’t fit in with the Weather Watcher’s, Gardening, Moon, or Country calendars. I’m glad to see you, too! | | That’s Not Funny! | Not all is fun and games in this calendar, though. We can be serious. And little is more serious than pickles. The 2019 Almanac has plenty of pickling tips, but if you wanted to know that the art of pickling is believed to date back to the Mesopotamian Empire, around 2400 B.C., you’d have to flip to January 29 in the Everyday Calendar.
Or if you want to know where the phrase “in a pickle” comes from, you’ll have to look at April 23 to find out that it appears in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, when King Alonso asks Trinculo, “How camest thou in this pickle?”
And if you’re curious to know how many pounds of pickles we Americans eat each year, on average, you’ll have to take a look at February 16. | | Out of This World! | Lest you think that the wit and wisdom is purely earthbound, we’ve added some astronomical knowledge, too. For instance, legend says that Greek astronomer Ptolemy (1st century A.D.) believed that the gods could open the barrier between the heavens and Earth to watch human lives unfold. When the barrier was jostled, stars would fall from their positions. The ancient Greeks thought that this was a good time to make wishes, because the attention of the gods was now focused on them.
Leaving folklore and moving to fact, did you know that NASA’s rover Opportunity, a six-wheel robotic explorer, found a basketball-size iron meteorite on the surface of Mars?
