Hey, Rachelle here…
How is it that something as simple as finding just 10 minutes to make art can be so hard?
Before having children I was lucky to settle into a beautiful studio in an old factory mill where I somehow had endless time to create. After all that creative bliss, I moved across the country sans studio, became a new parent, and struggled to find the “balance” of being a mom and a maker.
In a nutshell, I mourned a loss of self and time, and wondered how I could regain it.
It’s normal to feel this loss of self when we become parents. One thing that saved me was establishing a quick, but consistent, art practice…with my children.
Here’s how you can do it, too:
Carve out ten minutes a day to create. You’ll be surprised how that ten minutes can turn into more if you want it to. Reflect on what you enjoy about the process. Journal it out if it helps. Focus on process rather than product. This is so important. If you're worried about things turning out a certain way, perfectionism can kick in, you'll get in your own way, and you'll never build that habit. Do this with your child or children. If you’re having fun, they will too! Kids love spending time with their adults, and will naturally mirror your actions. If you set up a fun art activity to explore together, you both win! You get to do the thing you’ve been craving, they get to learn something new while having fun, and (bonus!) you both have the opportunity to bond over a shared experience.I just heard from an artist-mom who's running a thriving ceramics business. She joined one of my early programs and shared that carving out just ten minutes a day helped her child have fun with art and it ALSO super-charged her own creative practice.
