Dear Voornaam,
Each September, the first assignment of the school year was to write an essay titled: "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." I dreaded this assignment. I procrastinated until it was assigned, usually on day 1 of the new term.
By the time I got to sixth grade, I had discovered a new approach.
On the first day of summer break, I would write the essay as if it was mid-September, and I was looking back on what I had done. Then, I'd spend all summer making the essay come true. I conjured up several tickets to Yankee games, a vacation with my family to a new location, and an entire summer of sports activities in the backyard with my friends.Â
I'd like you to do that same exercise this year, but with a twist. Instead of pre-programming your summer relaxation, I want you to script out your business development activity for the next three months.
Here are three reasons why THIS SUMMER is the perfect time to focus on growing your business:
Work is Happening This Summer:Â Usually, people are sick of work by the time June rolls around. They want to get out of the office, away from their coworkers and clients. Things are different this year. Most people have only been in the office part-time, if at all, and they are hungry for human interaction and business. If you provide value, especially in the B2B space, you'll be able to get a meeting with your ideal client this summer. They need you now more than ever.
Now is the Perfect Time to Retool the Factory: Â I grew up near a General Motors Mini-Van assembly plant in North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow), New York. Each year in July, the plant would shut down for a month so they could "retool." This meant they would update the assembly line to build cars for the new model year.
July is the perfect time to "retool" your business development approach. Take stock of what is working well, what is not working, and what you can tweak to make work. Then make your adjustments. Now is also the perfect time to launch any new initiatives.Â
You should view July 1 just as you view New Year's Day. This is the time of the year to launch the initiative that will make the next six months more productive than your past two years.
Your Competitors are on The Beach: Everyone thinks they work hard. Few do. While your competitors are relaxing, you can take advantage of the opportunity to educate your prospects and make deals. In the summertime, your hustle will reward you tenfold. While your competitors nap and sip Mai Tais, you will be taking your money to the bank.
Look, winter may be coming, not just seasonally but in the form of a recession. Most businesses have cash, and they are looking to maximize any opportunity available. When you add that to the pent-up demand from a two-plus-year nightmare of virtual interaction and virus uncertainty, you have the ideal mix for a summer investment in your services.
Here's the breakdown:
People have learned to live with COVID, and they are ready to see you Prospects have money to invest in getting into a better market position before the recession hits this winter You provide value and solutions and can fill the need to address their concerns The competition is laying back and allowing you the opportunity to grab market share
Write your essay now. How will you spend your summer vacation? Will you spend it letting this opportunity pass you by, or will you be one of the winners come September? We should discuss your strategy. I can help you make the rest of 2022 more profitable than the past two years.
