Success in business (and life in general) is largely dependent on your ability to stay calm, focused, and performing at your best…

… no matter how hectic things get.

A client recently asked me:

“Craig, my life is completely chaotic right now. Some days I feel like my head might explode. How do you focus when you have a million things going on?”

My Answer:

1. I recommend journaling first thing in the morning for 5-10 minutes. Getting some of those thoughts out of your head and onto paper almost always helps.

2. Then do a 5-10 minute meditation to clear your mind and focus your thinking even more. I suggest starting with a guided meditation from the Calm app, or doing Coach Gavin’s money mindset meditation.

3. Next, go into your day's work with some relaxing instrumental (no vocals) music playing in the background. I like this from Erik Satie or this Chopin

4. Do a “brain dump” before you end your work day. Get all the ideas from your day down on paper again (think of this like closing the open tabs in your internet browser). Then use your brain dump to help plan the next day.

5. Finish the workday with a 5 minute silent meditation and gratitude session.

6. Make sure to finish work at least 2 hours before bed. Preferably earlier.

7. Use the 10-3-2-1-0 formula to sleep well…

- 10 hours before bed stop all caffeine

- 3 hours before bed stop eating and consuming alcohol

- 2 hours before bed stop working and shut off all work related electronics

- 1 hour before bed shut off ALL electronics including phone and tv

- 0 is the number of times you will hit snooze in the morning

Also, I highly recommend planning in 20 minutes of no-stimulus time each day after lunch.

Leave your phone and airpods at home and go sit under a tree outside or go for a walk.

Take a journal with you and use this time for your brain dump... or to strategize.

This puts the “dots” in place for your subconscious brain to connect overnight while you sleep!

Most importantly:

Pay attention to how you’re feeling.

And recognize when something is working for you.

If these habits work to slash your stress levels and boost your focus…

It’s probably best to stick with them.

Otherwise that sense of chaos will likely just return.

Success Loves Speed,

Craig
