It’s rare to talk to someone whose entire family and friend group are taking the same level of COVID-19 precautions. Scratch that – I don’t think that exists. Nine months into the pandemic, people are allowing more people into their bubbles, visiting family for the holidays and being less diligent about social distancing and wearing a mask — and the infection rate reflects it. Many cities around the country are experiencing some degree of lockdown again, after the U.S. recently hit an all-time high of more than 200,000 new daily cases. Yesterday was the single deadliest day of the pandemic in the U.S. so far.

So what do you do if someone you’re close to is playing fast and loose with the COVID rules and it’s putting your household or others at risk? We put together a guide on how to talk to them about it.

Elliot Page, the actor formerly known as Ellen Page, came out as transgender in an Instagram post this week, writing, “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life... I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me on this journey.” He also acknowledged that others aren’t so lucky; many who come out as trans to family and friends face horrible discromination and backlash and are ostracized from their communities.
