Last week’s events were utterly shocking. I, for one, was glad to be at home with my kids so I could steer the conversation and see what they were understanding first hand. It was an unexpected upside to all of us being home together all the time.
That said, I was wholly unprepared, understandably, for how to talk about insurrections with my 4 year old. And yes, I’m aware too many details can scare kids, but the TV was on and my husband and I were visibly worried, despite our best efforts.
I’m proud that senior reporter Caroline Bologna jumped into action, getting experts to tell her how to handle talking about scary news with kids. While yes, making sure children know they are safe and loved is paramount, there are some things to consider in your delivery, if you can control it. Unfortunately, I have a feeling we’ll be needing this handy guide in the days and years ahead.
Be safe and well, everyone. And a programming note, this newsletter will be off next Monday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. |
