🥚 What’s Behind Eggflation Part II |
You aren’t going to blow your monthly budget on a carton of eggs … usually. |
In terms of inflation in the last several years, it’s hardly the item that’s gained the most headlines, especially compared to mortgage rates, credit card interest rates, car prices and more. |
But on a relative basis, eggs have been at the very top of the list percentage-wise when it comes to price appreciation. And it’s not all due to raw economic inflation. |
The price for one dozen eggs hit $4.82 in January 2023, an all-time record. The price improved dramatically in ’23. But this year, it’s again up 37.5%. The No. 1 culprit? A highly transmissible avian bird flu. (It’s a repeat cause and effect from 2022.) |
Cal-Maine Foods (+84%) and Vital Farms (+135%), the two largest publicly-traded egg producers, were up multiples of the S&P 500 (+27%) year-to-date at the time of this writing. |
The relative good news? The most recent data either held the stock price of those companies flat or made the price fall. And managing the avian flu well over the next several months could turn the tide on egg prices once again. |
