FineArtViews - The AMP Newsletter

Hi There,

One of the songs P and I like to listen to when we're relaxing is "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake. That got me, being eternally curious, wondering about mirrors...

It turns out that fine mirrors are one of the most accurate surfaces made by man. I once read that if a small mirror was expanded to the size of a football field, then the mirror's surface would vary less than 1/30 millimeter! The surface of a glass mirror must be (pardon the pun), mirror smooth, because, for a mirror to be accurate, the light must pass through the layer of glass and reflect off of the "silver" applied to the back side of the glass.

The more a mirror is properly polished, the more accurate it's reflection. It's not uncommon for super-accurate mirrors, such as those used in telescopes, to be polished for hours and hours.

Mirrors, you see, aren't born. They're made.

More to come... on to today's art marketing ideas...

By now, you know that I am a strong believer that email marketing is the #1 marketing tool to increase your art sales and grow your overall business.

However, I've uncovered a big problem. We recently did a survey of over 500 artists. Only about a third of them use email marketing to share their art with their fans. It seems the other nearly 70% of you are reluctant to use email marketing and seem to think it will "bother" people. Or that the world doesn't need more "spam". These attitudes are really holding you back and aren't true if you do email marketing the right way.

I really want to know - please hit reply at let me know the following - if you're not using email marketing to help sell your art - why not? What is holding you back?

In the article below, Jenn Totten, Editor and Email Marketing Manager for FineArtViews has pulled some key information from our recent AMP webinar, How to Write Engaging Newsletters.

Enjoy,

Clint Watson

The average person receives over 120 marketing emails each day. The need to stand out in your readers' inbox has increased exponentially as this number will only continue to rise.

Even with the ever-increasing competition, email marketing continues to yield high return on investment. And, if you've been following along for a while you know that at FASO we believe email marketing to be one of the most successful marketing tools for artists.

Email newsletters are a great way to deepen your relationship with your audience through storytelling and personal, genuine conversation that may otherwise be overlooked on other web platforms.

People connect with other people, not the products that they are selling. When you receive an email from a retailer trying to sell you a pair of shoes with a great sale that's going on, it's unlikely that you are instantly drawn to the shoes through a deep emotional bond.

Purchasing art is a unique and personal buying experience.

You can use that emotional pull to stand out in your readers' inbox over the hundreds of other emails that simply want to sell them something.

Focus on creating eye-grabbing emails that will grab your reader's attention. People are inundated with material online and when reading emails, people will move on quickly if the email itself is not compelling.

You can use images and copy but make sure that you're trying new ways to grab your readers' attention so they continue to open and read your emails in the future.

Don't be afraid to get personal. People relate to others humility and "realness" that the internet lacks.

If you're struggling, it's okay to share that with your audience as long as there is a balance and that's not the only thing that you continue to share week after week.

This is also a great way to create conversation between you and your readers. Ultimately, your goal is to keep the conversation going.

You can also ask your readers direct questions throughout your email to encourage them to reply to your email. If you're sending out a new piece of artwork, you can ask them what their genuine thoughts are.

There are thousands of ways to utilize email marketing newsletters. If you're just starting out, it will take some time to gage what your audience responds to. Just remember that you don't have to fit into a "box". Just tell your own personal story and your readers are sure to be interested.

Until next time,
