By the numbers:
4,190.1 feet: The lake level at the Saltair station — 0.1 feet below the record set in October of last year.
1847: The year lake level data was first recorded.
10 million: The number of migratory birds who use the lake every year.
Why it matters:
The lakebed contains hazardous chemicals such as arsenic, cadmium, copper, mercury and selenium as a result of industrial activities near the lake — and the toxic dust is being carried into surrounding communities by storms.
What can be done?
“It’s clear the lake is in trouble. We recognize more action and resources are needed and we are actively working with the many stakeholders who value the lake.” — Joel Ferry, the new executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources
