Reconciliation starts here “The federal government has pledged to end underfunding for Indigenous child welfare services in Canada, including fully funding prevention programs to keep families intact instead of bringing kids into care. But that’s just the beginning. “Jurisdiction is the word on everyone’s lips, from government officials to Indigenous leaders, academics, youth in and from care, and families who have lost their kids. But one thing researching this series has taught me is that transferring jurisdiction for child welfare back to Indigenous people, who best know how to care for their own kids, will take time. Improving the lives of kids in care and the supports for keeping families together, however, can start today. “For the last piece in this 13-part series on the cause of the Indigenous child welfare crisis, I asked everyone I interviewed what can be done right now to end the trauma and put families back together. Their answers aren’t just limited to child welfare services or the powers of the federal government. It requires every person living in Canada right now to recognize the role they can play in ending this crisis — a century in the making — once and for all.” Complete series here. — Katie Hyslop |
