Sometimes this can feel harmless, like when you get an ad for a pair of sneakers you searched for the previous week on Google. But it can also be insidious and discriminatory, like when social-media companies such as Facebook exclude users from seeing certain ads if they are people of color.
These kinds of abuses can even have legal consequences — like when law enforcement buys our data to track protesters in a demonstration. The impact can be massive and so many of us aren't even aware of the civil-rights abuses that flow out of our data being collected, retained and sold across private companies.
