Clinical documentation improvement (CDI) programs need to expand their focus beyond CC/MCC capture reviews. New reimbursement methods are punishing facilities that cannot prove they meet certain quality standards. That proof often lies within what is (or isn’t) documented in the medical record. CDI professionals must understand how traditional reviews can be expanded to include investigations into Patient Safety Indicators and how to work cohesively with their quality departments to improve the overall capture of these important statistics.

Meet the Speakers

Mark LeBlanc, RN, MBA, CCDS,has more than 10 years of CDI experience and 35+ years of clinical nursing experience, including NBICU, pediatrics, homecare, and HIV/AIDS and mail order pharmacy operations. He has led two CDI teams in the successful conversion to a new electronic CDI system at two different facilities. He has been a leader in the area of documentation integrity focusing on SOI/ROM capture, which leads to appropriate revenue capture rather than revenue capture alone. He currently is a senior consultant in CDI supporting the implementation of a CDI-CAC electronic system.

Michelle McCormack, RN, BSN, CCDS, CRCR, has 10 years of CDI experience with a clinical nursing background in a variety of areas, including neurosurgery, ENT, med/surg, and OB/postpartum. She has led successful CDI departments in academic medical centers and in private and public institutions, including multihospital programs. She has expertise in transitioning CDI programs to electronic health records, advanced CDI initiatives, data management and reporting, and remote CDI program options. Her areas of interest are CDI data management and program monitoring, leveraging technology, growing CDI staff, and provider engagement.
