"We need to stop and pause and ensure purpose over tasks to ensure that we're keeping people safe." — Andrea Truex, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer, Englewood (Florida) Community Hospital

Thorough communication throughout each shift is the best tool for patient safety, says Andrea Truex, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer of Englewood (Florida) Community Hospital, which consistently receives high safety grades.

Truex knows something about safety; under her leadership, the hospital has received 18 consecutive "A" Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a national distinction recognizing achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections.

For this week's lead story, Truex spoke with me about how Englewood has achieved such high safety ratings and how other hospitals can achieve the same.
