#1 Hulu Lawsuit Targets TiVo
Hulu has filed a lawsuit in California against TiVo that asks the court to find that Hulu isnt required to renew an expired licensing deal because three TiVo patents asserted against Hulu in an earlier case have either expired, are no longer valid, or are linked to a service that Hulu no longer offers.
WHY THIS MATTERS: Rovi, which has been using the TiVo brand since completing its merger with TiVo in September 2016, and Hulu have duked it out before. In 2011, Rovi alleged that Hulu was infringing on three patents. In 2013, Hulu and Rovi entered a settlement and a licensing agreement.

#2 HDR TV Shipments to Reach 245 Million by 2022
According to a new report from ABI Research, High Dynamic Range (HDR) TV shipments will grow at a 41% CAGR, surpassing shipments of 4K TVs by 2020 to reach 245 million units in 2022. HDR is a new technology that produces brighter more vivid pixels.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The research firm added that that 8K TVs are still years away from permeating the global market despite the hype centered on Japans plans to deliver 8K video at the 2020 Olympics.

#3 Starz Releases App for Samsung Smart TVs
Premium programmer Starz announced the launch of a new Starz app for select Samsung smart TVs. The $8.99-per-month app gives authenticated subscribers access to original series and hundreds of movies as well as TV Everywhere rights.
WHY THIS MATTERS: The app lets users stream from a library of more than 4,300 selections, including movies such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Starz originals such as American Gods, Outlander and Black Sails. The app is also available for Amazon Fire TV, the Xbox One, Apple TV, iOS and Android mobile devices, Roku players and Roku TVs and Android TV-powered Sony TVs.
