Good Morning, Do! Today is Wednesday, October 2 THANK YOU very much, Wesley! Dad sent me a paper about the newest hydro project they finished this year not far from where he is. It is in an area, where I used to hike and climb. The funny thing is, the creek, coming from a glacier, is rather puny, and I remember walking across it and the water was never higher than my boots. They also drilled through a mountain and get extra water from Tirolia, next province over. That still does not amount to very much water. Yet, they are now producing 253 GWh. The trick is using cheap surplus night energy from the coal and nuclear plants in Germany and France to pump the water back up there at night, and in the morning, when industry starts up while Millions of housewives make breakfast for the kiddies, they dump the water 290 Meters, almost 1000 feet, at a rate of 135 Cubic Meters PER SECOND (5403 Cubic Feet PER SECOND) through the turbine. Imagine a house 25' x 22' x 10', that holds about that many cubic feet. Fill or drain that in ONE second! Instead of an ultra high pressure pipeline they simply drilled down through the rock and even built the powerplant terrorist proof in a cathedral size cavern in the rock. Once they had it all working right, they turned off the lights and went home. It is totally renewable resource. What controlling that might be required occasionally, is done via the Internet from the European central electrical control room in the next country over to the West: Germany. I think that control room is about 1000 Km away. The old joke that with hydro plants the only not renewable part is the toilet paper in the washroom behind the control room, does not apply anymore. If you are interested in that sort of thing, they have a video report of the construction at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvUQ6KxsPhA ____________________________________________________ Today, October 2 in 1925 Scottish inventor John Logie Baird completed the first transmission of moving images. Katherine Konon, of Shawnee, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. WDAF reports Sarah Braun picked up her 6-month-old son in late June and noticed the child was vomiting and had red marks all over hit head. Doctors at Children's Mercy Hospital said the red marks were a hand print and that the baby was hit so hard it caused a brain bleed. Konon's home is no longer a day car, and the state has revoked her day car license, according to the Fox station in Kansas City. The now-9-month-old seems to have fully recovered, and doctors are tracking his progress. Konon is expected in court on October 4. DearWebby's Tech Support Pits From: Lynn Re: Long reach routers Dear Webby You used too big words and I could not understand why long reach routers are safe. Please try again! Lynn Dear Lynn The initial call, the first step, comes from your computer. That call is a secret whistle, that wakes up the router. Any other noise does not wake it up. Just like your alarm clock wakes you up, but any other noise gets ignored. So, if YOUR computer does not wake up the router, it does not participate in the back and forth hand shaking, and just ignores any other noise. You can have six or more computers quite secretly whistling at each other, but any kid doing "war driving" from the sidewalk will be as totally ignored as if they were whistling at your toaster. I was elated when he called me at work with the news of my grandchild's birth. I took down all the statistics and turned to relate it all to my co-workers. "I'm a grandmother!" I declared. "It's a baby girl, and she weighs five pounds." "When was she born?" someone asked. Recalling the date my son told me, I stopped, looked at the calendar, and said in amazement, "Tomorrow!" ___________________________________________________ Daily tip from Thriftyfun.com Thriftyfun.com font color="#009990"> Empty Tennis Ball Containers If you have a tennis player in the family, save those empty tennis ball containers. Every day, I dodged potholes on the way to work, so I was relieved to see a construction crew working on the road one morning. Later, on my way home, I noticed the men were gone and no improvement in the road. Where the crew had been working stood a new, bright-yellow sign with the words, "Rough Road." ___________________________________________________ >From Eddy Teeing off on the 12th hole at a golf resort, we stopped to buy cold drinks from the young woman driving the beverage cart. As my buddy reached for his wallet, he said to her, "You're in great shape. You must work out a lot." Flattered, she gave him a big smile and gushed, "Oh, thank you so much!" The next day a different young woman was driving the cart. "Watch this," I whispered. I walked up to her and said, "Wow, you must work out a lot." "Yeah," she replied. "You should try it." ___________________________________________________ After I asked for a half-pound trout fillet at my super- market's seafood counter, the clerk picked one out of a pile and set it on the scale. It weighed precisely eight ounces. Impressed, I asked, "How did you know which one to pick?" Looking pleased with himself, he declared, "I'm psychotic." __________________________________________________ Ophelia Dingbatter's NewsNo sermon and not suitable for church, just jokes and fun for grownups.
