The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a masterpiece
John Huston seamlessly combines a Shakespearean tragedy, Parable, and Action/Adventure film together to create a highly effective examination of human greed and its effects on individuals as well as their relationships with others. .
Perhaps what is most impressive about The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is that every single moment in the film conveys these core ideas and themes. From the congested and sultry streets of Tampico where the film opens and travellers and locals gather with one common goal—to claw themselves out of poverty. To the rough Mountain wilderness where our main characters mine for Gold while battling cutthroat bandits, dangerous wildlife, and sometimes each other. . The great irony here is that the Mountain serves as a way out from the poverty of Tampico but it is only when our characters arrive at the Mountain and are detached from civilization that the downward descent into madness begins. As difficult as life in Tampico was, there is something to be said about the proximity to other human beings in a similar situation that keeps one sane. .
The origin points (both literally and figuratively) of the three characters are the same. All of them have been churned out of an unjust and ruthless system. At the beginning of the film, two of them are scammed out of their hard earned money by a rich business magnate. Yet by the end of the film only one of them lets avarice get the better of him. Just because someone is raised in a ruthless world, does not mean that they must lose their humanity. The role of the individual can not be overlooked. However, Huston is not naive and through a side character named Cody depicts the harsh reality that often those who are righteous are not met with happy endings. . .
