Unseasonable: Our tropical weather season sure has been, well, unseasonable. Mother Nature did something in August that’s only happened two other times since 1950. But forecasters told Mark Schleifstein that we shouldn't expect things to remain quiet. (So keep knocking on wood, tossing salt over your shoulder, whatever. . .) Meanwhile, contributing writer Richard Campanella tells us today about the city's first recorded hurricane, from 1722. It was ferocious. (Or, as they said back then, a "most terrible tempest.") For updates throughout the hurricane season, please sign up for our Hurricane Center newsletter. Out of captivity: This week’s release of a nun from Kenner who had been kidnapped in Africa was wonderful news. A friend who spoke to Suellen Tennyson told reporter Kasey Bubnash that Tennyson is happy to be out of captivity, but details of her ordeal and release will likely remain scarce. Horrible accident: A baggage handler died of injuries she suffered in a horrible accident at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport late Tuesday. Jermani Thompson’s grieving family talked to reporter Michelle Hunter about the young woman’s life and dreams. Summer breeze: It just seems like everyone you know is heading to the beach for the long Labor Day weekend. For those of sticking closer to home, food guy Ian McNulty has the next best thing – waterfront restaurants that will provide “a viable Plan B.” The new Gotham? Former U.S. Attorney Peter Strasser is weighing in on a handful of the big issues dominating the news cycle in New Orleans these days -- with an assist from Batman.
