Just as our Legends strive to demonstrate their superiority, Respawn introduced Ranked Leagues to let players prove their skill and accomplishments. Join us on a guided tour on the development of Ranked Leagues, as we reveal the data that provided the impetus for introducing a separate Ranked playlist, the challenges of making a ruleset work in the context of a Battle Royale, the tradeoffs we made to balance a fair measure of skill, simplicity, and clear avenues of progress, the modelling simulations we ran to predict if our system would work as desired, the roadblocks we ran into once the system actually went live into the hands of millions of players, and where we hope we can take Ranked Leagues to in the future. The Uncredited: A Lost History of Labor in Games

We can all name someone who designed to game or founded a company. But how much do we know about everyone else involved--not the folks who made games, but the ones who sold them, serviced them, or troubleshooted them? This talk will showcase the rise of the American computer game industry across the final decades of the 20th century, told through the point of view of three women who worked in sales, customer service, and technical support at Sierra On-Line. Coursing through the video game crash of the early 1980s, to the rise of the personal computer in American households during the late 80s and early 90s, to the massive mid-90s speculative investments in entertainment software spurred by the rise of the Internet, this talk will expand our sense of "who counts" in the game industry, and offer a longer timeframe for thinking about labor politics in the industry. This talk will discuss the Gears 5 real-time dynamics system used for thick, heavy leather armor, chains tied at both ends, hair such as dreadlocks and ponytails draped over shoulders, buckles, pouches, tentacles and many other challenging dynamics accessories! The presentation will cover the features of the dynamics system, demonstrate how the dynamics were setup within the Unreal Engine 4 animation blueprint system, as well as challenges and lessons learned to ensure the system kept within performance budgets in support of Gears 5 running at 60 fps on X Box One X, in all game modes. The 3rd Annual GDC Film Festival will take place at the Yerba Buena Center For The Arts' Screening Room - directly adjacent to the Moscone Center - from Monday, March 16 to Wednesday, March 18 during GDC 2020. Screenings will be open to all GDC 2020 pass holders, on a first-come, first-served basis.
