  • In the last three years, Butch Babin has suffered two broken hips, a broken leg, had a heart attack, undergone heart bypass surgery and had stents inserted. He also is diabetic, has had surgery to remove cancerous growths and recently had the lower part of his right leg amputated. None of that has taken away the Bangor native's love for coaching swimming or his positive attitude.
Bangor considers removing hospitals’ exemption from city’s polystyrene ban
  • When city officials wrote the new polystyrene ban that took effect on Jan. 1, they decided to exempt hospitals from the rule because a similar statewide ban on polystyrene will also exempt them when it takes effect next year.

    Now, some councilors want that to change.

  • Philip Clark, 56, confessed to police that he pulled the trigger after Renee Henneberry Clark, 49, pushed “every frigging button she could” until he snapped and shot her 10 times on July 11, 2018, in the bedroom of her Hampden apartment.

  • Gov. Janet Mills announced that she pardoned Donald Gellers, who defended members of the Passamaquoddy tribe in court during the 1960s and filed a massive land claim lawsuit on behalf of the tribe before being convicted of marijuana possession.

  • At about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Tammy Waltman was in Carmel driving northbound on Interstate 95 when the sun hit her eyes right before she reached exit 174. She couldn’t see anything, but after hearing crashing sounds all around her she slowed down and managed to stop — inches from a tractor-trailer truck.

Presque Isle Airport Board votes to keep flights with United
  • The Presque Isle Airport Advisory Board voted unanimously on Tuesday to recommend that United Airlines continue to provide Essential Air Service flights to and from Presque Isle International Airport. The board acknowledged that the decision would anger many in the community, but said United had more than earned its endorsement through the growth the company has spearheaded during its tenure at Presque Isle International Airport.
John Bapst finally gets a chance to play basketball in its former full-time home

  • The Crusaders have played at the site, whether in the Bangor Auditorium or the Cross Insurance Center, since 1955. This season, because of financial concerns, the school and Spectra Venue Management were only able to negotiate a deal for John Bapst to play four dates at the facility.
