HVAC WARNING SIGNS YOU DON'T WANT TO IGNORE

Most people don't think about their air conditioning or heating system until it stops working. To avoid being caught off guard by a system that suddenly stops working, it's important to become familiar with the early warning signs of a HVAC problem.
  1. Increased Repairs. Some things get better with age. Unfortunately, your HVAC system is not one of them. Constant repairs or short-term fixes are a sign of early system failure.
  2. Energy Bills are Increasing. If your energy bill is rising but your daily routine remains unchanged, the HVAC is often the reason.
  3. Uncomfortable Temperatures. If your system is no longer keeping your home comfortable, it may be time to change the filter and schedule preventative maintenance.
  4. Something Doesn't Smell or Sound Right. If there is a smell coming from your HVAC system, that is often a sign something is wrong. If you smell mildew, dirty socks, rotten eggs or a chemical odor, call a contractor to help diagnose the source. If you are hearing banging, whistling, rattling or squeaking from your system it could need maintenance or a repair.
  5. Excessive Water. While a HVAC system often produces a small amount of water, excessive water is indicative of a problem.

The average HVAC system lifespan is around 15 years. If your system is getting close to that threshold or has already passed it, you may want to consider replacing it with a newer, ENERGY STAR system. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs. NJCEP offers rebates to help offset the initial cost.  Learn more.

About New Jersey's Clean Energy Program (NJCEP):

NJCEP provides financial and other incentives to encourage customers of the State's electric and natural gas utilities to install energy efficiency (EE) or renewable energy (RE) technologies. Installation of EE and RE measures helps residential customers as well as businesses, local governments and schools reduce their electric and natural gas usage resulting in lower energy costs and reduced environmental impacts. Since 2001, New Jersey has invested more than $3.3 billion in incentives provided to over 1.6 million customers that installed energy efficiency measures and over 90,000 customers that installed solar systems. Measures installed in the last year will save about 483,000 MWh per year reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 290,000 metric tons a year. The program is authorized and overseen by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
