If you’re coming to Portland, come hungry! Whether you’re craving farm-to-table, sea-to-table, a quick bite or a mammoth spread, Portland is a foodie’s paradise. Sure, you’re bound to be super busy enjoying everything there is to do at HydroVision 2019 (seriously this show is STACKED), but your body is going to need energy for all that networking and learning, right? So why not energize yourself with something delicious? Portland has plenty of places to choose from!
Of course, with all of the options, your best bet is to consult the experts Portland’s locals. Never fear, we did it for you. We asked for Portlandians (a.k.a. Portland’s locals) for the best spots around town, specifically near the Oregon Convention Center, site of HydroVision. Here are the top five places locals told us you have to try! Pine State Biscuits Before you head to the Oregon Convention Center, start your day with one of the most bodacious (there’s no other word for them) biscuits on the planet. No matter where you’re coming from and HydroVision welcomes guests from all over the world the down-home cooking at Pine State Biscuits just tastes like home. Though we doubt your home ever had something quite like their signature dish, The Reggie. Take one flaky buttermilk biscuit, top it with mountains of crispy fried chicken, bacon, cheese, and sausage gravy, and you’ve got this masterpiece of mouthwatering delight. ‘Course the same thing can be said for their entire menu. Check it out!
Delicious Donuts “Mmmmm...donuts.” Homer Simpson must have been talking about Delicious Donuts, ranked #1 in The Oregonian’s “Portland’s Best Donut Shop” list. You know a donut shop has to be good when they simply name it “Delicious Donuts.” We admire their confidence, and really admire their donuts. They promise “donuts for every occasion” and are true to their word, with create-your-own donut options where you can pick your own toppings, fillings and frosting. Uh, yes please. Plan ahead and dream about the donut you’ll get to enjoy in July. Check out their menu!
Deadstock Coffee Looking for a lighter breakfast, or maybe a post-lunch pick-me-up before starting on the afternoon sessions? Deadstock Coffee is your place. We were sold the second we saw their tagline: “Snob-Free Coffee.” Love it. We also just really love their coffee, and the camaraderie that comes with it. We would share their menu, but there’s just one thing: they don’t have one! So basically you have to go in and explore for yourself. Don’t mind if we do!
Sweet Heart Pizza You can tell a lot about a city by the quality of their pizza. In which case, Sweet Heart Pizza is one of the many reasons Portland is such an awesome town. They describe themselves as “pizza with purpose.” So if your purpose is to chow down on delicious, old-world, Neapolitan-style pizzas topped with fresh, artisanal ingredients, Sweet Heart is the place. If it’s your first time, we recommend the Margherita. If you’re feeling bold and adventurous (you are in the hydropower industry after all), we suggest the Lamb Merquez. But y’know what? You do you and find what suits your pizza-loving palate. Check out their menu.
Altabira City Tavern So you’ve reached the end of a long, but fulfilling day at HydroVision. Maybe you’d like to kick back with a tasty cocktail or craft beer, or feast on a succulent steak dinner...or maybe both? However you wish to unwind, Altabira City Tavern is the place to do it. You’ll impress your colleagues with your good taste, and you’ll be impressed by Altabira’s incredible taste. Seriously, Altabira isn’t considered one of Portland’s best restaurants for nothing. Check out their lunch, dinner and draft beer menus (they have menus for everything), and experience one of the finest meals Portland has to offer.
Personally, we can’t wait for July 23 to arrive and not just because of Portland’s food. HydroVision 2019 is shaping up to be our best ever! If you haven’t done so already, check out our “What’s New at HydroVision 2019” blog series to get an idea of what to expect (hint: it’s a lot!) For now, the most important way to pregame for Portland is to register. Don’t miss out! See you in Portland, Oregon, USA!
