Few greet the end of a weekend with unbridled joy and happiness. Lately, however, Mondays have become a day of anxiety and worry for residents of British Columbia and Alberta as they wait for their governments to release three days’ worth of COVID-19 data. The numbers weren’t great early in the summer, and have gotten worse in recent weeks. For the first three days of August, B.C. reported 118 new cases, while Alberta added 238. The following Monday, the three-day total was 131 for B.C. and 257 for Alberta. On Aug. 17, B.C. dumped 236 new cases into its tallies while Alberta reported 359. Concern is spreading about the state of the pandemic in the West, especially in British Columbia, which had contained its COVID-19 crisis during the spring and early summer at levels far below that of other big provinces.
