Dear Healthline reader,

I don’t often write to our entire community. But the overconsumption of sugar — and the effects it’s having on the health of our families — is of great concern to me, and all of us at Healthline.

Recently, we asked you to share your knowledge of sugar consumption and its effects on health. Certain things you revealed to us were expected. For instance, you know that sugar is bad for you, and you feel guilty eating too much of it.

Here’s what was unexpected: Three out of four of you don’t know daily recommendations; 70 percent of you don’t know how many grams are in a teaspoon (it’s OK — we’ve created a poem for that).
In addition, you were surprised to learn that sugar can be as addictive as heroin.
Finally, 65 percent of you think you know someone who is addicted to sugar.
The risks associated with the continuous overconsumption of sugar include obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, immune system disorders, and certain cancers. The habitual overconsumption of sugar has also been linked to depression, hyperactivity, and Alzheimer’s disease. Our children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic and addictive effects of sugar.
Frankly, this outrages me. So much, in fact, that my wife and I have broken up with sugar — and so have our kids.
You can break up with sugar, too, and Healthline is here to help. This is something we can all directly control, right here and right now.
I hope you take a few minutes to read some of our stories and look at the results of our survey. The team here at Healthline has created all this information to help you #BreakUpWithSugar. I encourage you to share everything with your family and friends.
Yours for a stronger, healthier world,
David Kopp,
CEO, Healthline
