The world’s sixth-largest economy loses the size of Nepal’s GDP each year to waste-related pollution. But a new generation of entrepreneurs is offering a fix.

For 37-year-old yoga teacher Vidya Paramel, it wasn’t an easy decision to leave her home in New Delhi. But she couldn’t see her 4-year-old boy suffocate, and she refused to hide him away indoors from the smog that engulfed India’s capital every winter. So she moved to Pune in western India. It’s a dilemma millions of New Delhi residents face each year as haze intensifies from the burning of agricultural waste in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana and descends on the city. But while the capital is worst hit, air pollution from stubble burning afflicts most major Indian cities, so moving away is only a temporary fix.

Air pollution from the burning of farm waste costs India $30 billion annually — more than next-door Nepal’s entire economy — according to a report published by the International Food Policy Research Institute earlier this month, and it remains a leading risk factor for acute respiratory diseases in the country. The good news? Help is on the way. From using paddy straws to generate bio-coal briquettes or fodder to developing eco-friendly cremation materials, a growing number of startups are promising sustainable waste-to-wealth solutions that could finally help the world’s sixth-largest economy tackle its mounting farm waste head-on. In the process, they’re also holding out a model for other developing countries plagued by piles of agri-waste, from Egypt and Indonesia to Ghana and Nigeria.

They shell out for SAT, ACT and various AP preparation courses, and even, it seems, for professionals to “help” their kids write their college admissions essays. They endow their progeny with the benefits of legacy admissions. They pay for their kids to learn to play sports and pursue other activities (fencing, oboe playing, documentary filmmaking, anyone?) that give them advantages in the admissions process that kids from more modest backgrounds simply don’t have. And, in the most extreme cases, they give the target schools multimillion-dollar financial contributions that make it virtually impossible for admissions officers to say no to an applicant.

As Kyoung Ey Molly Kim cracked open her civil law textbook to prepare for her second semester of law school, she found that all she could think about was Overwatch.

Blizzard Entertainment had released the team-based multiplayer first-person shooter game in 2016. Though Kim had never been much of a gamer in college, she found that playing Overwatch eased the stress of the law school application process and, later, the coursework.

It didn’t take long for Kim, 24, to apply the same fervor that had long been spent on her studies — from English school in New Zealand to college at Mount Holyoke in Massachusetts — to Overwatch. In fact, Kim was enjoying her newfound pastime so much that, when esports teams began to crop up around the rapidly growing game, she decided to take on managing duties in addition to her law studies in South Korea. She earned a spot managing an aspiring pro team, Frecia Gaming, in the third-tier Overwatch Open Division. When her first semester of law school concluded, Kim spent the summer going to the arena, watching scrims (exhibition matches) and giving the players feedback.
