Few would say that this has been a good week. It got even worse yesterday, with news of the passing of The Roots' former MC Malik B at age 47. He left the group before the 90s was through, but his verses on the first four Roots records were such a key part of the group's sound. There's no way classic albums like Do You Want More?!!!??! or Things Fall Apart would have sounded the same without Malik's contributions. The way he and Black Thought worked off each other on songs like ' Mellow My Man' and ' Step Into The Realm' was perfect. The way he brings it home on ' Table Of Contents (Pts 1 &2) ' is legendary. If you're looking for something to listen to this weekend, you could do a whole lot worse than those first four Roots albums. Hip hop and jazz executed with both class and infectious energy. |
