Dear OZY Tribe —

I know India quite well. Or so I thought, as I made my sixth visit there last week.

Some things have not changed since my first on-a-shoestring backpacking trip in 2007 — I still love the crackling sense of energy in the air. I still love mango lassi. I still love auto rickshaws. (I’m in one, above, with my terrific colleagues Maroosha Muzaffar and Charu Kasturi.)

But the world's largest democracy, currently in the middle of the biggest elections in the history of the world, always surprises. On Thursday, May 23, we will know the results of the mammoth seven-phase election that has gripped India for the past three months: with more than 8,000 candidates, 12 million polling officials, 900 million voters — and endless twists and turns.

Ahead of that, here’s a chance to get smarter about this extraordinary country: OZY’s States of the Nation: India. Over the past three months, we’ve uncovered surprising, untold stories from every single one of India’s 36 states and union territories, capturing the dramatic changes — and those behind them — that are shaping the future of the country, across politics, culture, sports, society, business and tech.

These are not your usual election and politics stories; they’re not about horse races or punditry. Instead, they get under the skin of what is unarguably one of the most interesting places on Earth right now. For example:

OZY is committed to covering India, Asia, and the world smartly, positively and surprisingly. For us, each project like States of the Nation: India is the launching pad for even more ambitious plans to take you, our audience, on refreshing new journeys with stories that wow you — yet also help you connect with places and sectors you didn’t know before.

We’d love your support to continue to bring you the best that the world has to offer. We’ve now reported from every state of the U.S. in our inaugural States of the Nation, and from every state in India. Which captivating country or region should we cover next?

Send your ideas and your comments to me at managingeditor@ozy.com. I’d love to hear from you.

Namaste,
