United Nations Security Council gathered during meeting following Iran's recent attack on Israel

On Edge

The Story

Iran’sattack onIsrael is raising fears of a broader regional war.

What happened?

Iran made its first direct military attack on Israel over the weekend, launching over 300 missiles and drones. The move, which injured a young girl, was in retaliation for a deadly airstrike — widely blamed on Israel — that targeted Iran's consulate in Syria earlier this month. With support from the US and other allies, Israel's air defense system shot down 99% of the drones and missiles launched by Iran. Now, world leaders are trying to de-escalate tensions in the region as many worry about how Israel might respond.

Go on.

US officials said President Biden urged Israel to use caution in its response to Iran. It comes as Biden also reaffirmed the US’s “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security, but said the US would not participate in any counter-strike against Iran. For its part, Tehran said it would have a “much larger” response if Israel retaliates. Meanwhile, Israel’s war cabinet ended a meeting yesterday without a clear decision on how to move forward. The UN Security Council also held an emergency meeting over the weekend, urging all parties to pull back.

Iran’s attack comes at a time when the region is already in the midst of a major humanitarian crisis. After more than six months of war, the cease-fire negotiations between Israel and Hamas remain deadlocked. Now, many fear that an escalation of violence between Iran and Israel risks triggering a wider conflict.

And Also...This

Who’s experiencing a first…

Former President Trump. This morning, jury selection begins in Trump’s hush money case, marking the first time in US history that a former president will face criminal prosecution. He faces 34 felony counts for falsifying business records tied to a $130,000 payment made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Finding 12 jurors that are impartial to No. 45 could prove to be a challenge. The trial comes after several failed attempts by Trump to delay it until after Election Day. The trial will not be televised and could last until June.

…Oh andspeaking of Trump, a new poll from the New York Times and Siena College shows President Biden is catching up, trailing Trump by one percentage point.

Where people were shook (literally)...

Coachella. On Saturday, a magnitude-3.8 earthquake struck dozens of miles north of the festival. That wasn’t the only thing that had fans talking this weekend. Lil Uzi Vert showed fans that they not only want to rock but vogue too. Gwen Stefani and Olivia Rodrigo couldn’t help but come together over old bathwater — a sentiment Barry Keoghan probably relates to. Lana Del Rey cruised to her set and shared her lane with Billie Eilish. Tyler the Creator also tore it up on stage. TBD whether the festival’s second weekend turns out to be as eventful.

What’s facing backlash…

Nike. US track and field athletes are criticizing the company’s Olympic uniform as sexist and revealing. It comes after images made public last week shared a first look at the track and field kits for Team USA, with female athletes calling them skimpy. Nike said it’s providing Olympians with multiple uniform options. It’s not the first time uniforms have raised red flags in women’s sports.
