It’s Taco Tuesday! I love tacos. "Taco" originally referred to gunpowder packets used in 18th-century Mexican mines. Miners "stuffed" paper with explosives, much like we stuff tortillas today! 🌮 I’m glad you’re here to get tech-smarter. I’ve got a packed newsletter for you.

⌛ Quick tip: Text too small on your phone? Make it bigger. Go to your smartphone's settings. Navigate to the Accessibility or Display & Brightness section (name might vary by device). Adjust the text or font size to a larger setting for easier reading. Done.

Reminder to do your part to keep this free newsletter coming at you by checking out our sponsors. Today, RYSE is looking for folks to learn more about their company and SEC filings. — Kim

TODAY'S TECH HACK

Shortcut to find where a show or movie is streaming

Shortcut to find where a show or movie is streaming

A friend is raving about a new show you just have to watch. You're in, you're excited and then you realize, "Oh, it's on a streaming service I don't subscribe to."

The problem used to be there wasn’t anything to watch. Now, there are too many places to watch shows and movies. Here's a fast, easy way to find out what's available where.

There’s a site for that

Actually, there are two: Reelgood and JustWatch.

If you're looking to find a specific show or movie and where to watch it, either option has you covered. You can browse movies, shows and more from over 150 services, including heavy hitters like Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+ and Prime Video.

  • Simply search for a show or movie and get your results. You'll see where you can watch, rent or buy the title you're looking for.

It gets better

Reelgood will keep track of what you've already watched and episodes you still need to catch up on — and let you know when a new season is airing. Love that.

JustWatch recommends new shows and movies based on your previous search history. Create a watchlist of future movies or TV shows to consult when you have that moment of, "OK, what the heck do I watch now?"

You can use the websites or download the app version of either. Here you go: Reelgood for Android | Reelgood for iPhone | JustWatch for Android | JustWatch for iPhone.

‘Kim, whatcha watching?’

Glad you asked. "The Chosen" is great. It's about the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth as depicted by people around him. There are three seasons (26 episodes), so prepare to get addicted. You can watch it for free in the Chosen app or on Amazon Prime Video.

Btw, if you streamed a few things on Netflix you really didn't like, take a minute to remove them from your history. That way, no recommendations based on those flops!

You’re a cheapo

I am, too. I have this fabulous list on my site of ways to watch movies for free and get free books, audiobooks and music, too.

😂 Need a laugh? I want to watch “Hamlet” on a streaming platform. Does anyone know which one it's on? Is it Tubi or not Tubi?

AI and smart homes: A match made in tech (and investor) heaven

AI is taking our smart home devices further than ever. Think about Roomba, the robot vacuum that uses AI image analysis. It was acquired by Amazon for $1.7 billion.

RYSE is capitalizing on these trends by automating window shades.

Powered by advanced sensors and AI, RYSE SmartShades makes life easier and saves people big money on energy costs. RYSE received a Canadian $4M grant from the government to develop clean-tech products.

They’ve just opened the doors to new investors and you can own a piece of their company for just $1.25 a share — just a few weeks away from a massive retail launch.

YOU SHOULD KNOW

Crop it like it’s hot: The new Microsoft Designer app uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make graphics, write social media posts, resize images and lots more. Download it for Android here. (Sorry, fellow iPhone people.) Willing to bet it won’t be free forever, so grab it now while you can.

📱 Adios, Duo: Three years after its launch, Microsoft’s Surface Duo foldable phone is done getting operating system updates. Ouch … not many years of support for a $1,500 phone. The Surface Duo 2 gets one more year of updates. Stick to Apple or Android, folks.

Shop till you TikTok drop: TikTok’s in-app shopping is open to everyone. First, I hope you’re not using TikTok — or at least using this one safe method if you must. Second: Be very cautious. TokTok says checkout is safe and secure and user data will be stored in the U.S. I’m not sold.

Close call: Disney and Charter were playing tug of war with ESPN and ABC — and both landed on cable right before football season kicked off. Trust me, it’ll be a very bad day for broadcast TV if and when sports shift to streaming only.

Google made some privacy updates: And it’s worth going into the settings. Open Chrome, then Settings > Privacy and security > Ad Privacy. There are three tracking options you can switch off if you choose.

TECH LIFE UPGRADES

Quick security check: Go to google.com/devices and sign in. Scan the list of devices you’re signed into. See one that’s not yours? Click the device and choose Don’t recognize something? or Sign out. Now, change your password.

Need a headshot? Skip the cropped group pic or obvious selfie. For professional photos, go with a slight smile over your biggest grin. Pro tip: Blur the background so the person viewing your profile can focus on your face. If your phone has Portrait mode, use it!

🔖 Easier than bookmarks: Want all your tabs to open up when you start your browser? In Chrome, click the three vertical dots, then Settings. Click On startup > Continue where you left off. Steps for Safari, Firefox and Edge here.

Saving memories: Have old photos to scan? Before you do, wipe off any dust or fingerprints with a soft cloth to get the clearest scan possible. Give your scanner a dusting while you’re at it.

💤 Give your tech a breather: A restart not only closes all your open programs, but it also ends background processes, clears your cache and RAM, and much more. After you read this newsletter, turn your phone off and back on. Do the same with your computer for extra credit!

My hospital was hacked

Avatar

The hospital/clinic system where most of my medical information is stored has likely been hacked. What do I need to do to make sure my identity and insurance are OK, and what do I need to do going forward? Thanks for your help. — Becky in Wisconsin

If you got a notification letter, read it carefully to see what was compromised. Your first action item is changing your online healthcare portal password. If security questions are attached to your account, it’s worth changing those, too.

Keep in mind that after breaches, there's often a surge in phishing attempts. Be wary of emails or messages asking for personal info — or anything guiding you to "secure" sites. Double-check URLs, and never download attachments from suspicious sources.

Now, on to monitoring. You’ll want to keep an eye on your financial statements, credit report and any docs you receive from your insurance company. Watch for explanations of benefits statements for treatments you didn’t receive; they’re a sign someone’s using your identity to get care.

I have more tips on spotting that and protecting yourself here.
