Scripts are a cost-effective way to automate bulk operations that are otherwise time-consuming. However, scripting may not be a feasible long-term solution for many organizations.
There are major security and compliance disadvantages—scripting lacks a traceable audit trail, as well as granular access roles—and when SaaS vendors change their APIs, even the most well-made scripts break. There are API quota limits as well. Turnover also poses a serious risk for organizations that rely on scheduled scripts that perform critical actions. If IT does not maintain up-to-date documentation or if a replacement hire lacks scripting knowledge, then there will inevitably be continuity issues. IT cannot gain central visibility by piecing together multiple scripts. |
