“I don’t think I’ve landed from yesterday’s performance. I don’t even know how to thank you for the space, the invitation, being in a line up like yesterday’s. I will carry this with me.”

—Litquake Out Loud Author

Dear Friend,

As a San Franciscan organization, Litquake has always championed off-the-beaten-path approaches to storytelling in a world that isn’t always kind to unique perspectives. But we are so proud that we can now say—thanks to your support—Litquake is a BIPOC-majority festival. This is no small feat. Today at the largest publishers, nine out of ten books published are written by white authors.

This is why we want you to celebrate with us—right now—in the progress we’ve made together. In 2020, 60% of our authors were BIPOC and 80% felt their Litquake appearance was a career highlight. Last year, you made Litquake Out Loud, our new curatorial program for local BIPOC and LGBTQ+ writers, the festival’s most popular program track and you brought your passion for literature with you. Judging from what they had to say about it above, the authors were touched by your support. You’ve said it loud and clear—
everyone deserves the privilege to tell their story. Now let’s keep working towards that brighter future.
