Variety's Hall of Fame

“It’s not just because it is the right thing to do... It works!” said writer-producer Scott Silveri.

"So many products are looking for product placement. Sponsors are looking to buy ad space -  ‘we want to be associated with this project,’”  he adds, referring to the success of ABC's sitcom, “Speechless.”  Silveri was a panelist on the ‘Abilities Unlimited’ panel, presented by Easterseals, at Variety’s 2018 Inclusion Summit.

Inclusion is good for business. There is money to be made. More than 25% of the US population identifies as having a disability, representing a market of more than $21B annually. This point is reinforced in Variety’s first-ever special report, “Abilities Unlimited.” Variety and Easteresals teamed up to provide an in-depth look at the state of disability across entertainment, and provide tangible ways the industry can advance disability inclusion and more authentic representations.

And while there’s been positive progress in recent years, people with disabilities are still the most underrepresented population across entertainment and media; with too few opportunities afforded in front of or behind the camera. “The work’s not done,” said actor and panelist CJ Jones.

When it comes to expanding disability inclusion in the entertainment industry, everybody has a role to play. To learn how you can support inclusion in your next project, start by visiting this helpful online resource guide HERE.

“The door got opened a crack for us, and we want to leave it open just a tad more for the next bunch,” Silveri concluded.

Easterseals is committed to changing the way the world defines and views disability, breaking down stigmas and celebrating disability in its many forms. In 2019, the organization will commemorate 100 years of disability service and its continued commitment to this important community.
