1) Lord by João Gilberto Noll
For a former student who is a voracious reader and fluent in Portuguese. I asked the person working the booth which of the Noll books is their favorite, and of course she pointed to the one that looks like Kundera's cover.
2) The Reconception of Marie by Teresa Carmody*
I didn't really buy this one; Teresa and I swapped books at an event on Saturday. She made the cover! I've been wanting a copy since I heard her on a The Lives of Writers episode a year (two years??? what is time?) ago. |

3) Heaven No Hell by Michael DeForge
Me: DRAWN AND QUARTERLY HAS A TABLE!!!!
Alyson: They have a table every year.
4) Draw it With Your Eyes Closed; The Art of the Art Assignment
I've been an inconsistent subscriber to N+1 for at least five years now. I particularly enjoy their books, and I'm going to use this one in my creative writing classes next year.
5) Eleutheria by Allegra Hyde
I mean, c'mon. Look at that sky blue and orange contrast. It's unspeakably gorgeous. (Preview: We have an essay from Allegra coming out sometime this summer.)
6-8) Three selections from The Cupboard press
This is my comfort press.When the book fair seems too big and noisy, I look for The Cupboard. I love that they make tiny books; I love that they sell a tote bag that says, "Fuck Genre,"—I have been asking them to make a t-shirt for years—and I always snag at least two little guys from their table each year.
9) Self Portrait in Green by Marie NDiaye
Speaking of "fuck genre": Evidently this book is what happens when you ask a Frenchwoman to write a memoir. Were there any small presses or journals you learned about this weekend (at AWP or elsewhere—like the SMOL Fair) that you're particularly excited about? Till next week,AS |
