A study published this week found that nearly 90% of long-term care facility staff members who had an acute respiratory illness during five months of surveillance continued to work while they were ill. This was in spite of the facility’s policies prohibiting working while sick.

In its latest report to Congress on AO performance, CMS said accreditors continue to miss too many condition-level deficiencies during surveys, particularly in those areas.

In a recent laboratory poll about personal protective equipment (PPE), 85% of respondents said their biggest issues had nothing to do with selecting PPE, purchasing it, or training staff. Instead, the biggest issue they deal with on a day-to-day basis is compliance—getting people to protect themselves when there is a potential for exposure to bloodborne pathogens or chemicals.
