2 dead after fire erupts in Chicago's Morgan Park residence VIDEO: Two people are dead after flames engulfed a home on the Far South Side Thursday evening. Just before 6:30 p.m., crews responded to South Homewood Avenue, just north of 115th Street in Morgan Park. "The fire alarm boxed the fire because of the heavy volume of fire, and there was a report of people trapped inside of the building," said Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Anthony Frazier. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes. Inside, two men were found dead on the main level. The victims have not yet been identified. Officials said crews encountered several challenges that made the fire more difficult to control. "There were barricades on the back door, like a 2x4, I guess to keep people out. Also there was also a lot of debris inside of the building which made the fire a lot more hectic to fight," said Frazier. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO Two People Perish in Greenfield Fire Two people fell victim to a structure fire in the City of Greenfield this afternoon. Greenfield Fire Chief Cory Hudson says that initial calls came in for a kitchen fire at a single-story residence on Green Street in Greenfield at 12:23PM. A Greene County Sheriff's Deputy and Greenfield Police Officer were the first on the scene and attempted to make entry into the home. Greenfield Fire units arrived a short time later. Hudson says heavy fire had already engulfed the structure, which was a double-wide trailer. Hudson says that with the new emergency dispatch system in Greene County, Carrollton Fire Department was radioed out for automatic mutual aid. White Hall and Roodhouse Fire Departments were eventually radioed for additional manpower. Firefighters were on scene until approximately 4:50PM for overhaul and suppression of hot spots. WLDS-AM 1180 & WEAI-FM 107.1 JACKSONVILLE Driver Extricated After Semi Crash On Joliet Street The Joliet Police Department announced on Thursday night that a major crash has caused police to close Route 53, which is South Chicago Street. The crash happened around 6:10 p.m. at Patterson Road and South Chicago Street. Because of the wreck, Joliet police have closed South Chicago Street all the way from Fifth Avenue to Doris Avenue, police announced on Facebook. Also, the Interstate 80 ramp for South Chicago Street has been shut down as well, police said. Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey said that crews from Stations 1 and 3 responded to the wreck involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver of the semi was not hospitalized. JOLIET PATCH Fire at Illinois Capitol complex forces partial evacuation A fire Thursday at the Michael J. Howlett Building, part of the Illinois Capitol complex, forced some workers to evacuate. At least nine Springfield Fire Department engines, plus two battalion chiefs, responded to the scene where a blaze confined to a multi-purpose room in the basement was reported. There were no injuries. Workers in the Howlett Building were told to evacuate, though not in the rest of the Capitol complex. The building is connected to the state Capitol via a series of tunnels. The Howlett Building will be closed to the public on Friday, said Dave Druker, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office. KTTV FOX 11 LOS ANGELES FDNY inclusion training helps trans community feel respected, protected The FDNY has been making all the difference in how EMTs and other frontline workers respond to calls. The goal of the department's diversity training is to make the transgender community feel more comfortable calling 911. The transgender sensitivity training is taught by firefighter Brooke Guinan, who knows what it is like to be on the other side of the uniform, needing the help of emergency services while battling depression. She used her personal experience to help write the lesson plan. "I remember being a trans person dialing 911," Guinan told PIX11 News, "and genuinely being fearful … I didn't know how they were going to interact with me, or treat me, or if they would see my humanity." Fellow transgender firefighter Krys Freebes said representation matters. "At the end of the day, we are all humans," Freebes said. WPIX-TV CW 11 NEW YORK Connecticut firefighters rescue ‘Justin Beaver' trapped in water PHOTOS: Firefighters have freed a trapped beaver and perhaps bestowed it with a pop music career. CT INSIDER - METERED SITE Firefighters concerned about possible change to Iowa's fireworks law Local fire departments are expressing concerns about a bill now on the way to Gov. Kim Reynolds' desk. Currently, cities and counties in Iowa can decide where fireworks are sold. If the bill becomes law, fireworks stands would be allowed in commercial and industrial zones in every city and county in the state. Clive Firefighter Clay Garcia showed KCCI security camera video from 2019. The video shows discharged fireworks sparked in a garbage can, igniting an entire container of explosives. Garcia says fire departments are not in favor of the bill allowing fireworks to be sold in industrial and commercial zones. "Putting those stands next to businesses is a recipe for disaster. We as a city know that better than anyone else," Garcia said. Senate Democrats argued the bill is dangerous.
