Chicago firefighter who died battling high-rise fire on city's North Side suffered heart attack A firefighter who died while battling a blaze in a high-rise building on Chicago's North Side died of a heart attack, autopsy results released Thursday showed. Lt. Jan Tchoryk, 55, died of hypertensive-arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to the autopsy results released by the Cook County medical examiner. Tchoryk "went down" on the stairs on the building's 11th floor, Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt told reporters. The blaze was reported before 8 a.m. Wednesday on the 27th floor of the condo and apartment building in the Gold Coast neighborhood. The extra-alarm fire was ruled accidental and started after combustible material was placed "too close to a heat-generating appliance," Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said Thursday. For this nine-year-old, it's something bigger. "I want them to know they're not alone," she said. Emmy's calling card is her kindness. Maybe she learned it from Mom and Dad or maybe she picked it up at school at Trinity Lutheran. Perhaps it's just in her DNA. "She has a heart of gold," said Emmy's father, Jeremy Hickey. "I don't think she has a mean bone in her body." Her daily purpose has become giving back to those who give all of us so much. "They save us from all of the dangers in the world," Emmy said. When Emmy learned of a local EMT's suicide, she jumped into action shopping for snacks and delivering care packages to local first responders. Since her first deliveries last year, she has provided smiles and hope to dozens of local police officers, firefighters, EMTs and ER nurses. Her work even earned her the "Good Deed Award" from the American Legion Auxiliary. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

The incident happened at a 5-story apartment building on La Salle Blvd. Fire crews have been battling this fire since at least 3:30 a.m. The fire was still active at 6:25 a.m. Friday and at around 7 a.m., crews were finally able to get the flames under control. According to the Detroit fire chief, at least 20 residents have been displaced. Displaced residents are being sent to a local recreational center. Of the 11 victims hospitalized, seven are being treated at Henry Ford, three are being treated at Grace Hospital, and the last victim is being treated at Receiving. WXYZ-TV ABC 7 DETROIT California shooting: Firefighters went in with tactical gear to rescue shot officer VIDEO: Firefighters in Fire Station 5 helped rescue the California Highway Patrol officer hit by an active shooter Thursday afternoon in Roseville. The shooting happened outside the front doors of Station 5. Firefighters heard the shots and put on their tactical gear to find the officer and bring that officer back into the station to start treating them. Dispatch audio described some of the scene. Firefighter: "Possible active shooter incident. We should have a total of two battalions, two engines, a truck company … AMR unit and (inaudible) supervisor." The firefighter alerted other first responders from inside Station 5 of an active shooter. Firefighter: "We are locked down in Station 5, barricaded." KOVR-TV CBS 13 STOCKTON Atlanta fire lieutenant has touching reunion with firefighters who rescued him after accident VIDEO: A lieutenant with Atlanta Fire Rescue is usually the one doing the rescuing, but yesterday he thanked the crew who rescued him. Channel 2's Berndt Petersen was at the Shepherd Center in Buckhead where he met the team of fellow firefighters who saved the lieutenant's life. It was a reunion of sorts outside the Shepherd Center Thursday. Atlanta Fire Rescue Lieutenant Mark Quick had met a group of DeKalb County firefighters once before. "Oh! I would say it's kind of surreal," Quick said. He doesn't remember much about the night of Jan. 15 along Snapfinger Road. He was off duty and drove up on a really bad car wreck. He immediately jumped out to help but was hit by a passing vehicle. Moments later the DeKalb firefighters arrived. A train carrying a colorless flammable gas called vinyl chloride derailed less than four miles from her home, in Paulsboro, N.J. After researching the carcinogen, Dello Iacono placed towels around her windows and doors. But it wasn't long before she felt a sugary burn in her mouth. "I remember it so vividly. It tastes sweet, but it tastes like a chemical sweetness that you know something is not right," Dello Iacono said. "And then I started feeling like a tight band was around my head." An hour or so earlier, Glenn Roemmich, the captain of the volunteer fire department, was sleeping in on his day off. He woke up to an urgent dispatch about a train that had partially fallen off a bridge. WHYY-TV PBS 12 PHILADELPHIA Massachusetts police warn of dangerous 'Trouble Bubble' spicy gum TikTok challenge VIDEO: A Massachusetts police department is issuing a warning about a new TikTok challenge — after it put almost a dozen students in the hospital. Southborough police warned students not to try Trouble Bubble gum, which is sold on Amazon. Police say it contains the same active ingredient as police pepper spray, oleoresin capsicum. Police-level pepper spray is normally rated to 1 to 2 million Scoville heat units, the measurement of the amount of heat someone feels when they come into contact with the substance. The gum is rated at 16 million Scoville heat units. For comparison, Carolina Reaper peppers — currently the highest Scoville-rated peppers — contain 1.5 million to 2.2 million Scoville heat units. Jalapenos generally range from just 2,500 to 8,000 Scoville units. WCVB-TV ABC 5 BOSTON PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
