‘All of us are carrying these burdens': Evanston firefighter helps colleagues cope with stress Tom Howard, a full-time firefighter since 1993 and an Evanston firefighter since 1999, looks like he's straight from central casting. He is tall, fit, tattooed and confident. Firefighters, like most first responders, are active, take-charge, Type-A people. They like helping. Broadly speaking, showing emotion or admitting vulnerability does not come naturally. "We don't do sad," Howard said. "We go right to anger." A 2021 multistate study found that firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians had "significantly higher" rates of suicide compared with the general U.S. population. In 2020 alone, 97 firefighters and 26 EMTs and paramedics died by suicide, according to the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance. EVANSTON ROUND TABLE Fundraiser in Rockford held for first responders First responders put their lives on the line every time they go out on a call. A local group is making sure their families get the support they need. First responders filled Franchesco's restaurant on Thursday night, all for a fundraiser benefitting 100 Club of Illinois. They partnered with Safer Citizens of Winnebago County to put on the event. Winnebago County Sheriff, Gary Caruana says, "Why are we here? It's not just about raising money, yes, it is raising money, but it's more than that. It's about engaging in the community." According to Sheriff Caruana, 100 club of Illinois started in the Chicagoland area before expanding it's reach. "I saw the model, I said, ‘This is something I would like to engage with for our law enforcement and first responders, fire, EMS, to help them in situations of need,'" Caruana adds. WTVO-TV ABC/MYNETWORK 17 ROCKFORD Update: Stolen Chicago ambulance driven in nearly 80-mile police chase deemed a 'total loss' The ambulance stolen from a Chinatown firehouse that led a nearly 80-mile police chase has been deemed a total loss by city inspectors. The ambulance was stolen Monday afternoon and driven for two hours and nearly 80 miles, as police used various tactics to try to stop it, including rumble strips, which led to a smoking wheel rim for parts of the chase. The Chicago Fire Department said Thursday the Chicago Department of Assets, Information and Services inspected the ambulance and deemed it a "total loss" and it "will be stripped out and scrapped." After the initial incident Monday, the ambulance was put on a flatbed and secured overnight in Coal City. The next day it was put on a flatbed and driven to an AIS facility at 68th Street and Wentworth Avenue, where it was inspected. VIDEO: New York firefighters rescue climber trapped on cliff in Jamesville Quarry As Syracuse firefighter Chris Duffy scaled down the side of the Jamesville Quarry he was calm as could be, despite hanging more than 80 feet over the base of the quarry. "I don't think it could have gone any better," Duffy said. Duffy and several other members of the Syracuse Fire Department were called to the quarry at 9:13 p.m. last Friday for reports of a climber stuck about 80 feet up on the side of the quarry near Rock Cut Road in DeWitt. The climber had been attempting to scale the near-vertical cliffside without a rope or a climbing partner, they said. She became stuck when she realized there was no safe way to continue upward or to climb back down, which left her stranded well after it was dark out. The SFD rescue crew was brought into the quarry on utility vehicles loaded with gear necessary for the rescue, Lt. Jeremy Burton said. SYRACUSE.COM Firefighter injured after falling out of New Jersey fire truck en route to call A Hamilton firefighter was injured Thursday when he fell out of a fire truck while en route to a call in the Mercer County town on Wednesday. The firefighter was in the front passenger's seat of the rig with its lights and sirens on just before 1:30 p.m. when the passenger door opened and he tumbled to the ground near the corner of Nottingham Way and Donald Drive, Hamilton police said. "He was leaning on the door and it gave way," a Hamilton police spokesman said. "There was some bleeding to his head and he was brought to Capital Health [hospital] with moderate injuries." The truck was taken out of service. A photo from Peterson's Breaking News shows it was Engine 14. The Hamilton Fire Division couldn't be reached for more information. NEW JERSEY ADVANCE - NJ.COM Tennessee junior firefighters train to defend reigning championship in first competition since 2019 VIDEO: Junior Fire cadets in New Market were getting in one last training session Thursday evening before heading off to the Warren County Junior Firefighter Competition in North Carolina this weekend. Market Junior Cadets are the reigning champions of the nationwide competition. It will be the first competition since 2019 after it was put on pause because of the pandemic. In the competition, teams of students between 13 years old and 18 years old compete against groups from across the country to see who can complete drills the fastest. It's the New Market Junior Firefighter team's third time headed to competition. It's something they said they'd been looking forward to for more than 2 years now. For them, it's a way to prepare for their future careers. "For me, it means a lot because I look up to the fire service. I like it and it's something I want to be a part of when I get older," said Isaac Cook, a junior firefighter. WBIR-TV NBC 10 KNOXVILLE Meet the Louisiana parade that's been rolling long before most Mardi Gras krewes Throughout the early centuries, fires would rage in growing wooden-structured urban communities across the United States. Over the years, fire departments would begin with bucket brigades, pump, and eventually steam engines. But, as costly as fires are, the resources to fight them are as well. The Thibodaux Firemen's Fair and Parade began both as revelry and a way to fund the fire department. It's believed to be the oldest continuous parade in the country. "My family's involvement is not different than the history of a lot of families in Thibodaux. My great-great-grandfather was a captain of the Thibodaux Fire Department No. 1 and the Protective Fire Company No. 2, of which I am a member, and was formed in 1867. There has been a member of my family in it since it started." WGNO-TV ABC 26 NEW ORLEANS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
