One displaced after vehicle fire spreads to Loves Park home A woman is displaced after a vehicle fire spread to her home in Loves Park. The fire happened just before 1:30 Thursday afternoon in the 2700 block of Maple Avenue. According to Loves Park Battalion Chief Greg Kunce, flames from the vehicle spread to the outside of the home, extending to the roof and into the attic. Firefighters were able to contain the fire and quickly extinguish it. No one was hurt, although the home does have smoke damage. The estimated cost of the damage is unknown at this time. Fire officials believe the fire started in the engine area of the vehicle, although the cause is still under investigation. WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Fire reported at two-story Springfield structure Firefighters responded to a structure fire Thursday afternoon in Springfield. The Springfield Firefighters Local 37 union page on Facebook said the fire is in the 2100 block of S. 14th St. Active fire was reported after 3:30 p.m., and crews said the fire was believed to be out at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday. The building involved was a two-story structure. Crews said smoke was showing from the second floor when they arrived. Flames were reported in the attic area. Ameren Illinois was requested to respond to the scene. It's unclear if there were any injuries. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR New Gurnee fire station coming in $1.2 million under budget Construction of a new fire station on the south end of Gurnee is coming in on time and under budget, according to village officials. Gurnee Fire Chief John Kavanaugh said work crews have started on the facility's interior and are about 95% done with the exterior of Fire Station 3, which is being built near the intersection of Route 21 and Manchester Road. "We're coming into the home stretch," Kavanaugh said during a presentation to the village board this week. Kavanaugh and other members of the department will be doing a walk-through of the building and making a final list of outstanding tasks. The project was approved by the village board a year ago, when it was expected to cost about $7.1 million. Assistant Village Administrator Jack Linehan said the final cost ended up at $5.9 million because there was a lack of construction demand during the pandemic. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Tour with a Twist: Chicago Fire Department offers air and water show tours Fred A. Basse is part of Chicago's history as one of two former fireboats touring in the United States. "You're actually part of Chicago's history," said Erich Totsch, co-owner and co-captain of the Chicago Fire Department. Named after the 39th Mayor of Chicago, who served from 1907 to 1911. Unlike most other boats on the docks along Lake Michigan, this has special connections to the city of Chicago and both aviation and water shows. "This will be one of the most unique boats you'll see on the water. Built in 1936, it's the first diesel fireboat in Chicago and specially designed to fit under all bridges," said Raymond Novak, co-owner and co-captain of the Chicago fireboat. The fireboat was fully functional until 1981. We now offer educational tours of both city and boat history just by riding the waves. ILLINOIS NEWS TODAY PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

City In California Swears In Alicia Welch To Serve As Its First Woman Fire Chief Alicia Welch knew she wanted a career that would challenge her mentally and physically, leading her to become a firefighter three decades ago. "I just wanted to help people and have a job where I would have to think and act," the Lompoc Fire Department's new chief told Noozhawk. A badge-pinning ceremony for Welch occurred Tuesday night during the Lompoc City Council meeting, a week after she started her new job. "I am really happy to be here serving you and this community," Welch said during the meeting. She came to Lompoc from a stint starting in 2018 with the Golden Fire Department in Colorado. Before that, she spent 27 years in various capacities with the Los Angeles City Fire Department from 1990 to 2017, rising in the ranks from firefighter to battalion chief. She is the first woman to serve as fire chief in Santa Barbara County or any of its cities. NOOZHAWK Minnesota fire department to staff new medical vehicle specializing in cardiac arrests The Edina Fire Department, in partnership with the University of Minnesota, will soon help operate a first-of-its-kind truck specializing in treating cardiac arrests. The fire-truck-sized vehicle, which will use a heart-lung bypass machine to treat patients who are experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest, will be stored and staffed by the Edina Fire Department. At its meeting Aug. 4, the Edina City Council approved an agreement to partner with the university's Center for Resuscitation Medicine, which officially launched the vehicle earlier this year. "We're able to take part in a program that's advancing neurologically intact survival from a sudden cardiac arrest," Edina EMS Chief Ryan Quinn told the Sun Current. "If we can be a part of latest and greatest evidence-based medicine, then it's a unique place to be and great opportunity for us to play a role." SUN CURRENT - METERED SITE How a 1976 St. Louis Fire Gave 'Escape From New York' Movie Its Setting PHOTOS: The dark streets, the shuttered buildings, the nightmare sci-fi future — St. Louis had it all when director John Carpenter featured the city's downtown as the main setting for his 1981 action masterpiece Escape from New York. The mix of devastation and grime wasn't a product of the city itself, but rather the aftermath of a firestorm that had consumed six buildings and left the area near Locust Street and North 21st Street looking like it had been carpet-bombed in 1976. For local filmmaker Mike Gualdoni — who this week released a tightly produced documentary video exploring the St. Louis settings in the legendary film — the choice to replicate a dystopian "New York" in a section of downtown St. Louis was nothing short of genius. RIVERFRONT TIMES Antique hook and ladder truck returns to New York fire department PHOTOS: In a true blast from the past, an antique, 1938 hook and ladder truck that once served the Rome Fire Department for more than 30 years has been returned to the city from a collector in Canada. The bright red fire truck is in "fantastic condition" after years of maintenance and "drives like a charm," said Deputy Fire Chief Timothy W. Reilly, who helped organize the donation. The city's firefighters hope to use the truck in future parades and other events after a little restoration. "There was no way we were going to pass this up," Reilly stated. "We are never going to have this opportunity again." According to Reilly, the truck was purchased by the City of Rome in 1938 as the city's first motorized ladder truck. ROME SENTINEL AstraZeneca antibody cocktail 77 percent effective in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 among the high-risk AstraZeneca scored a win on Friday as data showed its antibody cocktail is 77 percent effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 in high-risk populations. The research found no one who took AstraZeneca's combination, called AZD7442, developed severe COVID-19 or died due to the virus. In comparison, three participants who received the placebo endured serious illness, with two fatalities. AstraZencea called the treatment, involving the antibodies ixagevimab and cilgavimab, the first "long-acting antibody combination to prevent COVID-19" in a release. Overall, 25 positive coronavirus infections were confirmed in the Provent study involving more than 5,100 patients across sites in the U.S., U.K., Belgium, France and Spain. The participants were unvaccinated at the time and had a negative test. THE HILL PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
