Peoria Fire Department combats cancer exposure in firefighting gear Fighting fires is a dangerous enough job, but now the International Fire Fighters Association is warning departments the very gear meant to protect them might be causing a different harm. Carcinogens from soot, exhaust and other fire scene hazards can get caught in the fibers of firefighting gear, also called "turnout gear." The dangerous particles trapped inside the gear then seep out into the air that firefighters breathe back in the firehouse. The Peoria Fire Department said they've been trying to combat carcinogen exposure for years, long before this official announcement from IAFF. "We knew this, we knew this was on the rise but we've started the ball rolling as far as getting extractors in the firehouses," Assistant Fire Chief Rick Morgan said. He recalled in his early years with the department firetrucks would run and pump exhaust into the garage, without the proper ventilation to remove it. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA Fire in Prospect Heights condo building leaves dozens of families homeless VIDEO: Dozens of people were without homes Thursday night after a fire raged through a condo building in Prospect Heights. The fire department said they were called at 1:04 p.m. to the building at 818 Old Willow Rd. They found a two-story condo building with fire in the attic and heavy smoke coming from the peak of the roof. The source of the fire was located in the bathroom of a second-floor apartment, the fire department said. Dozens more fire departments were sent to the scene for a total of 50 firefighters, 10 fire engines, and four aerial trucks, and the fire was put out within 20 minutes. No one was injured, but all the residents of the 32-unit condo building were forced out of their homes because of the damage. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Buffalo Grove house left uninhabitable after fire Buffalo Grove fire officials are still trying to determine what sparked a blaze at a house on the 2100 block of Brandywyn Lane Thursday evening that left the home uninhabitable. Firefighters were called to the single-family house at 6:15 p.m. when residents returned to the home and discovered it filled with smoke. Firefighters initially encountered heavy smoke and high heat throughout the house when they arrived. The cause of the blaze that caused excessive fire and smoke damage in the home is still under investigation, officials said. No damage amount was immediately available. THE DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE Peoria firefighters battle house fire A smoke detector alerted Peorians of a house fire Friday morning. Peoria firefighters were called to a home on E. Virginia Avenue near E. McClure Ave. for reports of smoke in the building. When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the home. The call came in just after 3:00 a.m. Firefighters were able to check the home and extinguish any hot spots. The fire investigator determined the cause to be accidental. Battalion Chief Lore Baxter said there were no injuries reported, but there's an estimated $50,000 worth of damages. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Taylorville police, fire departments team up in blood donation drive The Taylorville police and fire departments are helping out the community in a different way with the Battle of the Badges. The goal was also to get the whole community to come out and donate blood. "It's just kind of bringing awareness to the community," said Michael Mann, volunteer firefighter. "We know there's always a shortage of blood. So the two entities, the fire and police, always just kind of -- even if it's not softball... You know it's blood. Just try to get people to come in and help the community out." WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

Firefighters told to wear protective gear less to limit exposure to 'forever chemicals' linked to cancer A firefighters union and a chiefs association are both warning members that the protective gear firefighters wear poses a health risk because it can contain PFAS, synthetic chemicals associated with issues such as an increased risk of liver and kidney cancer. PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they're nearly impossible to destroy. They're able to resist stains, grease and water, so are used to make products such as workout clothing, raincoats and firefighters' turnout gear, which is designed to block both moisture and heat. In addition to certain cancers, PFAS have also been linked to risks of low birth weight, high cholesterol and thyroid disease. So on Tuesday, the International Association of Fire Fighters, or IAFF, and the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association advised firefighters to wear turnout gear only when absolutely necessary, in order to reduce their exposure to the chemicals. NBC NEWS North Carolina fire rescue department restoring 100-year-old fire truck VIDEO: Next November, the Kernersville Fire Rescue Department will celebrate 100 years of service in the Town of Kernersville. To help mark the day, the Fire Rescue Department is restoring a special piece of history. Over the last several months, the Department has been working to restore a 1923 American LaFrance Brockway Torpedo Fire Truck. It's the department's first fire engine and was purchased in the Summer of 1923 for $6,500. Battalion Chief Barry McLean said the Town of Kernersville helped to fund the special restoration project. "It being around for 100 years makes it special," McLean said. "It is really the only artifact, anything that we can put our hands on from day one of the fire department. That really makes it unique and the fact that it still runs, it's going to have the original engine in it." WFMY-TV CBS 2 GREENSBORO 'It changed my life': Resident thankful for Washington firefighter who fixed up her house VIDEO: Grandma Elsie" can't stop bragging about the firefighter who changed her life. She's in her 90's and said a dramatic life twist came after accidentally setting off her Life Alert pendant. She wears it in case of emergency and one press will alert and dispatch help. The Monroe resident admits she didn't realize she had activated her pendant when she was attempting to mow her lawn. Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue showed up and learned that it was a false alarm, but firefighter Brandon Huber felt compelled to help with the yard work. "I have four sons so I told her we would come and take care of her lawn," Huber said. That's when Huber started to ask Elsie about the condition of her aging home. "It was in rough shape," Huber said. "Mostly wood and almost no paint to it needed some love." SPECTRUM NEWS 1 - METERED SITE West Alabama ambulance service's unusual strategy to recruit future EMTs is working In early August, NorthStar Ambulance in Tuscaloosa started doing something ‘untraditional' to recruit future EMTs. The strategy seems to be paying off so far. It was back in early August when Northport officials said they need at least 15 prospective EMTs. It appears they're getting just what they needed. Like so many businesses around the country, NorthStar Ambulance felt the sting of COVID. EMTs and paramedics quit and COVID was the blame. So the company did something different. NorthStar started its own ‘Earn While You Learn' program. The goal? Attract potential recruits. It worked, according to Brent Dierking. "We had tremendous success with the jobs fair. Our goal was to receive 50 applications for employment considerations," said NorthStar spokesman Brent Dierking. WBRC-TV FOX 6 BIRMINGHAM PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
