Cicero firefighters battle extra-alarm apartment building fire VIDEO: Firefighters in west suburban Cicero battled an extra-alarm fire in an apartment building Friday morning. Neighbors said they woke up to their apartments filled with smoke. The fire broke out in the three-story apartment building overnight in the 5900-block of West 16th Street in Cicero. Residents said they woke up to thick black smoke and not knowing what was happening. "I heard people outside running I'm like, the building is on fire so I had to get my mother, who is 65 years old and I got my two nephews who stay with me, one asthmatic and my mother is asthmatic and it was just real terrifying," Trienette Lark said. "I didn't know if I was going to be able to get out. She's on a walker." A Cicero spokesperson said the people was evacuated and no one was injured. A police officer at the scene said about 20 to 30 people have been displaced. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Second generation firefighter steps into Peoria Heights Chief role VIDEO: He's a second-generation firefighter, paramedic and longtime public servant, now Dan Decker is the Peoria Heights Fire Chief. Decker is also an East Peoria city council member. Decker was approved unanimously for the role overseeing the department that is mainly run by volunteers. Budget is a big concern for the department, but Chief Decker says he's ready for that challenge. "I will make work the money we're able to spend. It's a whole lot easier the more we're able to spend, but we'll live within the means that we're able to receive and we'll do what we can," said Decker. In the past three decades, Decker has served in Pekin, East Peoria, Morton, Washington and Fulton County. WEEK-TV NBC 25 PEORIA PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: 1 found dead, investigation continues after reported Minnesota house explosion At least one person is dead after a home in South St. Paul reportedly caught fire and exploded Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to a house on Ninth Avenue South near Spruce Street just before 6:20 a.m. "I heard a big loud boom and it shook my house," Donna Johnson, who lives nearby, told us. "Another one went off, I jumped back … then we saw the fires," her husband, Dave Johnson, added. Other neighbors called 911, including Esperanza Lopez, who described her call to a dispatcher. "I just saw my neighbor's house exploded," Lopez explained. She was like ‘What do you mean, exploded?' It completely exploded." Lopez says her husband tried to get close to the burning home to see if he could help, but the fire was too big. South Metro Fire Chief Mark Juelfs says after crews extinguished the flames, one person was found dead inside the garage. However, authorities haven't yet publicly identified that person or even released the victim's gender or age. WORCESTER TELEGRAM & GAZETTE - METERED SITE Tennessee man who became '90% entrapped' in corn grain bin is rescued PHOTOS: A Tennessee man was rescued from a grain bin after he became 90% engulfed in corn kernels and crews raced to free him, firefighters said. In a Facebook post, the Ethridge Fire Department said that around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, crews were sent to a farm on Henryville Road to rescue a 70-year-old man who owns the farm. Authorities said that they found that the man was entrapped in the corn near the middle of the large grain bin. After locating the man at the center of the grain bin, crews deployed metal tubes to help stabilize and secure him. Crews then used a vacuum truck to remove the corn from the bin so that the man could be removed by emergency personnel through the access door of the bin, authorities said. The Fire Department said that the patient was checked by Lawrence County EMS and eventually released without injury. FOX NEWS Missouri fire department braces for chimney fire calls with special bucket of tools VIDEO: The Lemay Fire Protection District has responded to so many chimney fires over the years that the department's firefighters have created their own bucket of tools designed specifically for chimney-related fires. The bucket is made of metal, which gives firefighters a safe place to deposit hot embers. Firefighters can wet towels stored inside the bucket to create steam. The steam can help extinguish a chimney fire while minimizing water damage to a home. Bags filled with fire-extinguishing materials are also stored inside the bucket. Firefighters can drop them down a chimney. "It's an extinguishing agent that's exactly like your fire extinguisher that you would have in your kitchen," Lt. Jason Brice, Lemay Fire Protection District, said. Brice advises anyone using their fireplace this season to make sure it's inspected annually. KTVI-TV FOX 2 ST.
