3-alarm fire in Evanston leaves over a dozen residents displaced Over a dozen people are left without a home following a fire at a courtyard complex in Evanston Thursday morning. Around 8:30 a.m., fire crews arrived on the scene where they encountered heavy fire from the third floor of the complex, in the 900 block of Judson Avenue. The fire was upgraded to a three-alarm fire within 12 minutes of being at the scene but was under control within an hour, fire officials said. Two cats were killed as a result of the fire. No other injuries were reported. Fire officials say 13 residents were displaced. American Red Cross was notified to assist. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Tolono Fire Chief urges community to call 911 for 'non emergencies' Tolono Firefighters are encouraging you to call 911 instead of their station when you need help. Last year, the department handled 511 calls, the most in its history. They said some of those would be considered ‘non-emergency.' That includes checking on small fires that have already been put out, getting smoke alarms looked at, or giving people lift help. Chief Chris Humer said it's a volunteer department, so they don't always get those messages right away. Humer said calling 911 will get people help faster. "The most important thing is we don't want to delay people in the community getting the help they need," Humer said. "Even if it's just picking someone up. We want to get there in a timely fashion and provide the assistance that they need when they need it." Of the station's 511 calls, 68 were considered ‘non-emergencies.' WCIA-TV CBS 3 CHAMPAIGN None injured in car vs. train crash in Peoria The Peoria Fire Department responded to a car vs. train crash near 2600 Clark Street Thursday. According to a Peoria fire press release, firefighters were called to the scene at approximately 11 a.m. When they arrived they found a small car on the tracks with moderate damage and a train car up against it. The train did not appear to be damaged and was still on the tracks. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured, and out of the car when firefighters arrived. The crash caused an estimated $15,000 in damages. Representatives from the train company arrived on the scene to mitigate the incident. Peoria police were also on the scene to determine the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA Trash Fire Causes $500 Damage To Building In Naperville A trash can in a cooking area caught fire early Wednesday morning, causing $500 in damage to a building in Naperville. The fire started around 1:40 a.m. at a home in the 1800 block of Naperville Road, according to a news release from the Naperville Fire Department. Everyone in the building had begun evacuating before fire crews got to the scene and discovered "light smoke" in the kitchen, the news release said. It took firefighters less than 10 minutes to put out the flames. Fire officials say the kitchen will stay closed until it can be inspected by health department officials. The cause of the fire was determined to accidental. NAPERVILLE PATCH Chicago's South Side Irish Parade announces 2023 Grand Marshal Preparation is underway for South Side Irish Parade. The St. Patrick's Day parade is just over a month away and Thursday morning, parade organizers gave CBS 2 the early scoop on who the Grand Marshals will be this year. This year's honor will go to Chaplain's of the Chicago Police and Fire Department. Father Bill McFarlane works with firefighters and their families, while Father Daniel Brandt ministers to police officers and their families. VIDEO: Raging Fire Destroys Supermarket in New York, Shoppers and Workers Rushed to Escape Huge flames from inside a Bronx supermarket sent smoke billowing into the air, as a fire erupted when the busy store was filled with shoppers and workers. The blaze broke out at a C-Town Supermarket on University Avenue in the Morris Heights neighborhood round 5:30 p.m., fire officials said, and quickly grew to 5-alarms. An employee said the grocery market was busy at the time when he noticed sparks and smoke coming from the ceiling, near some cables. The shoppers and workers were able to run out of the store safely, the employee told NBC New York. The FDNY later said four people were injured, one civilian with minor injuries and and three firefighters. Two people who live in the building next door said they heard a loud explosion and ran out from the home. WNBC-TV NBC 4 NEW YORK CITY Related: More than 200 firefighters battle raging 5-alarm fire, at least four injured California firefighters prepare for the next big earthquake at 'Disaster City' VIDEO: As the world watches the deaths mount in Turkey following the devastating earthquakes, local firefighters are training to make sure they are prepared to respond to a similar disaster. Crews from all over Southern California gathered at a training center in Sherman Oaks, dubbed "Disaster City," to learn how to search for victims trapped under rubble brought by an earthquake. Equipped with listening devices and cameras, these teams of firefighters methodically searched behind every wall and building for hours Thursday. "We have people trapped in buildings and we have to use canines, cameras and listening devices to locate these folks and get them out in a timely manner," said Oxnard Fire Department Captain John Cecena. KCAL-TV CBS 9 LOS ANGELES Indiana City Announces New $100,000 Down Payment Housing Program for Sworn Police and Fire At the 7th Annual Public Safety Report meeting Thursday, Mayor John Hamilton announced a new $100,000 no-interest down payment assistance program for up to 10 police officers and 10 firefighters as an incentive to live in the city of Bloomington. Commencing immediately, the pilot housing program is the only such program known to exist in the country. After 10 years, participants will realize $100,000 in home equity. Attracting and retaining top firefighters and sworn police officers is a concern nationwide. Enabling police officers and firefighters to live where they work allows for better community connections and reduces crucial travel time in the event of an emergency situation. The new pilot program will support individuals in buying homes they may not be able to otherwise afford in Bloomington, enabling them to build wealth and stability over time while integrating 20 first responders into the community for the long run. CITY OF BLOOMINGTON Love & firefighting: Pennsylvania couple met as volunteers, became friends and married When Jessica Markle — then Jessica Fink — walked into West Manchester Township Fire Department's (WMTFD) Shiloh Fire Company back in April 2015, she was a college student who decided to become a volunteer firefighter on a whim. Little did she know that she was about to meet somebody who would change her life. "I was at the station talking to a friend, and Jessica walked in and walked past us," Josh Markle said. "I looked at my friend and asked, ‘Who's that?'" Josh, who had been with WMTFD for a little over a year at that point, was certainly intrigued by the new volunteer. Over time, they got to know each other and became great friends. About two years later — March 2017 — the two friends began dating. They got engaged in 2019 and set their wedding for May 2, 2020. But like just about everything in the spring of 2020, the wedding was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. YORK DAILY RECORD - METERED SITE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
