Minimum manning discussions ongoing as Springfield looks to lower firefighter overtime The city is expecting millions of dollars in overtime this year from the Springfield Fire Department. It's a trend officials say cannot continue. One solution being discussed is changing the number of on-duty firefighters. Right now a contract between the city and the fire union says, no matter what, 49 firefighters have to be on duty at all times. The city is looking at that number as one of the potential ways to solve the overtime problem. Contract negotiations between the City of Springfield, the fire department, and the fire union are still underway. But one topic has been at the forefront since talks began: minimum manning. "When you hear someone say, 'We need to work on minimum manning,' what they're really saying is, we need to cut the fire department," said Local 37 President Vince Zummo. WICS-TV ABC 20 SPRINGFIELD Vacant Decatur building frequented by homeless catches fire VIDEOS/PHOTOS: An empty building at 141 E. Marietta St. is likely a total loss after a fire on Thursday that the building manager said was probably inevitable. Building manager Bill England said the building was empty and boarded up, but they have had a lot of trouble with homeless people breaking in and building fires for warmth, which he thought could have caused the fire. "Homeless guys keep breaking in and starting fires in the fireplace in this apartment up here," England said, gesturing to the upper floor of the building. "I'm assuming that's what happened." The building and several nearby houses are all owned by the same person, he said, and all need extensive remodeling to make them habitable. The Marietta Street structure was boarded up repeatedly in attempts to keep people from breaking in, but England said they kept finding ways inside anyway. HERALD & REVIEW - METERED SITE Firefighter Who Found Baby Boy Dead Outside Chicago Firehouse Joins In Somber Prayer Vigil A Chicago firefighter spoke at a prayer vigil Thursday night, just days after he found a newborn baby dead outside his fire station on the city's Near North Side. The baby boy was left in a duffel bag on a bitterly cold Saturday morning in the single-digits. At a prayer vigil Thursday night, CBS 2's Jackie Kostek spoke with the firefighter who found his body. The firefighter who found the body read scripture at the vigil. He did not go on camera when he spoke with Kostek, but he did say the baby appeared fully developed. "To do nothing would leave us so empty and so abandoned from ourselves," said the Rev. Reverend Larry Lisowski of Immaculate Conception of St. Joseph Parish. Just days after a newborn baby boy was left just outside the firehouse at Orleans and Hill streets and ultimately died, neighbors are coming together to do something. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Enrique Czako promoted to lieutenant for Kankakee fire district Czako, a Kankakee Fire Department firefighter since October 2010, has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. Czako was officially promoted to lieutenant of the 45-member department on Jan. 12 and appeared before the Kankakee City Council on Tuesday. The department has nine lieutenants. "Enrique is an outstanding employee with great potential and we look forward to his continued growth as an officer of the Kankakee Fire Department," Chief Bryan LaRoache said. "We can't wait to see his next accomplishment." A lifelong resident of Bourbonnais, Czako is the son of Cuban immigrants. He and his wife, Samantha, are the parents of two children. He is a 2004 graduate of Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School. He earned his fire service administration degree from Southern Illinois University in 2012. HERALD & REVIEW - METERED SITE Energizing The Brain: Combating Safety-Critical Worker Fatigue Using Wearable Neurotechnology Fatigue caused by extended periods of work and insufficient rest can impair job performance, situation awareness and decision-making capabilities, even when it's needed most. Specifically, in safety-critical environments, such as responding to wildfires, fatigue has been associated with a two-fold increase in the risk of injuries and errors, and a four-fold increase in safety-compromising behaviors during emergencies. To mitigate these outcomes, researchers at Texas A&M University are evaluating how the impact of fatigue-causing performance declines in safety-critical workers, such as firefighters, nurses and emergency room (ER) doctors, can be delayed through the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a wearable and noninvasive brain stimulation technology that uses weak electrical currents to stimulate certain parts of the brain. NORTHESCAMBIA.COM Turning up the heat: Vermont fire chief orchestrates live-fire training to prepare his crews VIDEO/PHOTOS: In a scene that has tragically played out across the United States yearly, a Christmas tree starts a fire inside a building, but this scenario created by the Bellows Falls and North Walpole fire departments was just a training exercise to prepare firefighters for real-world events. Bellows Falls Fire Chief Shaun McGinnis helped orchestrate a live-fire training at an abandoned building that allowed the fire to be controlled by members of his department while the training was playing out. Before the call went out to a team of firefighters that was staged at a local fire department, Bellows Falls Fire Department's Lt. Ben Masure and Deputy Tony James placed Christmas trees into an elevator shaft and other parts of the building. Then the call went out that a person was "trapped" in the building. McGinnis talked about the training that he and his team were running. BRATTLEBORO REFORMER - METERED SITE See the viral video that earned an Oklahoma fire department hundreds of jars of Ragú VIDEO: Tahlequah firefighters can make a lot of spaghetti after a TikTok video landed them nearly 800 jars of Ragú sauce. Ragú recently began a new series of commercials under the catchphrase, "Cook Like a Mother," one of which featured firefighters. The Tahlequah company decided to replicate the commercial as a team-building exercise, featuring firefighter Anthony Margarit. The Tahlequah Fire Department plans to use its pallet of pasta sauce as part of a fundraising spaghetti supper for the community in the spring, which will benefit Professional Firefighters Local 4099 tragedy fund.
