Truck fire knocks out power, sends cloud of smoke into air in Des Plaines PHOTOS: A truck fire was to blame for a cloud of black smoke that caused alarm in Des Plaines Thursday morning. The fire was also to blame for a power outage in the nearby area. The Des Plaines Fire Department said at 11:32 a.m., firefighters were called to the area of Rand and Seegers roads for a truck fire. They found a semi-trailer truck ablaze at the scene. A large roll-off dumpster was attached to the burning truck in a raised position, the fire department said. Firefighters used hand lines to put out the fire, and employed the water supply from a nearby fire hydrant, the fire department said. There were power lines immediately overhead, and there was concern that the fire might already have burned them away. ComEd came to the scene to evaluate power issues, the fire department said. At 10:07 am, everything changed. The department was alerted for a structure fire, not an uncommon occurrence for the four-station department – serving approximately 52,000 residents and home to James Madison University. It was what happened to Tower 1 that made this response different. The Harrisonburg Fire Department takes pride in its professionalism and commitment to safety. On November 14, a convergence of forces resulted in a situation that nearly led to the death of one of Tower 1's members. As Tower 1's officer noted, "I would feel awful if this happened somewhere else…if doing this awareness saves just one person, it's worth it." WMBB-TV ABC 13 PANAMA CITY U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to hold forum on lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes after string of deadly fires The head of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced plans Thursday to hold a public meeting to further investigate safety issues with lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes following a sting of deadly fires. "Lithium-ion battery fires are deadly and destructive, as we have all learned from recent e-bike fires in New York and around the country," Alexander Hoehn-Saric, chair of the CPSC, tweeted. The meeting will not only focus on fires occurring in e-bikes and other micro-mobility products, but on the "fire risks that may arise with the growing consumer market for other products containing such batteries," according to the CPSC. During the public forum on July 27, the agency will "gather information and expertise regarding the science of these fires, particular safety issues related to e-bikes, and what it means for safety as more and more of these batteries are used in our homes and garages," Hoehn-Saric continued.
