The Oak Lawn Fire Department raced to Airway Mobile Home Community, 9001 S. Cicero Ave., just before 6:30 p.m. Fire crews worked quickly to put out a fire in an older mobile home off of Cicero. Neighbors told Patch that the people who lived there were not home when the fire started. No injuries were reported. Chief Zack Riddle, of the Oak Lawn Fire Department, said there were no injuries and the blaze was contained to the unit or origin. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The northbound lanes of traffic on Cicero were closed for about 90 minutes, but have since reopened. OAK LAWN PATCH Peoria Fire Department recruiting new firefighters The Peoria Fire Department is opening up a new recruiting cycle, and community members are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be between 21 and 34 years old, with some exceptions. You must also have a high school diploma or GED, and pass a physical agility exam. The department recently hired 11 new firefighters with a $4 million dollar SAFER grant. The new firefighters will help staff Engine Company 2, which is out of Station #8 located on Hurlburt street. "Now we have the staff that are actually going to be there full-time, all the time, we're going to have some relief for the crews out there and it just adds to our complement of personnel to be able to respond to emergencies," said Nate Rice, division chief of fire prevention with the Peoria Fire Department. VIDEO: Big rig explodes into flames during police chase on 5 Freeway in southern California The driver of a reportedly stolen big rig out of Kern County was taken into custody Thursday after leading California Highway Patrol on a slow-speed pursuit on the 5 Freeway near the Newhall area. The truck was traveling southbound on the freeway, going through Newhall and ending up near Castaic Lake, heading into the Santa Clarita Valley. Authorities made several attempts to deploy spike strips on the freeway. The big rig eventually hit one in a set of three laid out on the roadway, leading to one of the tires coming off the front right passenger side. At one point, the driver was seen writing on a piece of paper and holding that paper up to the windshield. It's unclear what was written. The driver was able to continue driving for a short time before the front left driver's side of the big rig began to catch fire. The council speaker says currently only 8% of firefighters are Black, 2% are Asian and only 1% are women.
