Federal Emergency Grant To Save Park Ridge Over $43,000 An application made on behalf of the Park Ridge Fire Department last year has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist the department in replacing the "Jaws of Life" equipment used by firefighters to extricate individuals who get trapped in vehicles during accidents. Fire Executive Officer Paul Lisowski applied last year. The current equipment is wearing out. The total application was for $47,000. FEMA will pay $43,091 (90 percent) and the city pays 10 percent. FEMA, however, had trimmed the deadline to accept the package to a maximum of 30 days. Ald. Gail Wilkening (3rd) asked for an approximate total of grants which Lisowski has obtained since joining the department. The current total he has saved for the city is almost $1.2 million. JOURNAL & TOPICS NEWSPAPERS ONLINE Mendota looks to address firefighter, EMT staffing issues The full-time staff at the Mendota fire department have been stretched thin for the past year, with some members racking up 120 hours of overtime in a two-week pay period. To put it lightly, they need help. "We are in dire circumstances right now," fire chief Dennis Rutishauser told Mendota city council members at a public safety committee meeting on Thursday evening. "With the current full-time staff there just isn't enough." Mendota's department, like many local departments, is struggling to find the manpower to staff the station during all hours of the day. The fire department takes care of the city's ambulance calls, which occur more frequently than fire calls. Right now, the department has five full-time employees and about 20 paid on-call volunteers who respond via pagers during an emergency. NEWS TRIBUNE (NORTH CENTRAL ILLINOIS) Galesburg Fire Department receives grant for SCBA gear The Galesburg Fire Department was recently approved for a 2018 Assistance to Firefighters Grant to purchase self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). AFG grants are awarded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency by the Department of Homeland Security. This grant, facilitated by GFD Captain Matt Cain, totals $146, 470, of which 90% ($133,154) will be funded by FEMA. The City of Galesburg will fund the remaining 10% at a cost of $13,315. The revenue will be used to purchase 20 new SCBA and additional face masks that will replace the department's existing equipment that does not meet current standards on firefighter respiratory systems and safety. The first rudimentary breathing mask for firefighters was designed in 1825 by Giovanni Aldini. THE REGISTER-MAIL Streator auto body fire deemed unintentional Damage to a Streator auto body business that caught fire Thursday night was contained to mostly the western portion of the garage. Other parts of Morgan's Auto Body, 708 E. Hickory St., only suffered minor smoke damage, according to a press release issued Friday morning by Streator Fire Department. When firefighters arrived just before 8 p.m., there were flames coming through the roof of the garage area and other parts of the building were charged with smoke. The building was empty. Streator fire investigators and the State Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause of the fire to be unintentional. Ten Streator firefighters worked on the scene for about 3 hours searching for hot spots and investigating the cause of the fire. MYWEBTIMES-THE TIMES PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

NWITIMES.COM South Carolina firefighters use social media to highlight long hours, short staffing VIDEO: Multiple calls, extremely long hours and short staffing. Those are just a few issues Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire District crews are dealing with. Fire Chief Norman Knight said they're using social media to shine a spotlight on these issues. Back in July, the Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire District asked voters to pass a tax millage increase with the goal of increasing salaries, adding staff and bringing in another paramedic ambulance. The final vote was against the increase and Knight said he believes it's because the department's need wasn't clearly explained. "The referendum wasn't just about putting on another ambulance and trying to hire people for that. While that was one of the main focuses, it was also to generate more funds that we can be competitive with the rates that we pay our [employees], and the salaries we pay our [employees], and benefits we pay our employees," he said. WMBF-TV NBC MYRTLE BEACH Florida firefighter repurposes damaged hoses into American flags Daryl Paul, a Panama City Beach firefighter, creates something new out of something old. "I didn't think people would really like them at first," Paul told WJHG. But people fell in love with Paul's fire hose American flags. "I love my country, I love my city and I love my job. So for country, that's cool, doing my flags, and using the tools of my trade, you know. I just love working with it," said Paul. The idea came to him about five years ago. He started manipulating old, damaged hoses with fellow firefighter Scott Frazier. "You know, each hose has got a story behind it. It's been into something that not a lot of people or things get to experience," said Frazier. After those first few creations, Paul kept making more. Now he's up to more than 100 and they're hanging all over the world. WJHG-TV NBC/CW+ 14 PANAMA CITY PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
