8 rescued when 5 boats capsize in Lake Michigan, Evanston fire officials say VIDEO: Eight people were rescued in Evanston after five boats capsized on Lake Michigan, fire officials said. Evanston Fire Chief Paul Polep said everyone on all the boats are accounted for, and some people were able to get back to shore on their own. No injuries have been reported. A spokesperson from Northwestern University said two of the boats that capsized were from the Northwestern Sailing Club. The incident happened near Clark Street Beach and the Dempster Street Boat Launch. A sudden change of weather around 5 p.m. caused roiling waves that caught boaters off guard. "The lake kind of flipped on us and capsized some boats. Multiple people in the water. We had a full water response," Polep said. Winds howled, sending a windsurfer flying through the air and into the lake. A lifeguard directed rescue boats to where people needed help. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Dehumidifier causes Peoria house fire, $25,000 in damages A faulty dehumidifier caused a fire with heavy smoke at a home on Thursday afternoon. Peoria Fire responded to 3320 Elmcroft Terrace at 1:45 p.m. after a report of heavy smoke. The resident of the home told responders that he was upstairs when he heard a loud explosion and smelled smoke. Firefighters found heavy smoke in the basement, and crawled in zero visibility to locate the fire next to the water heater. The fire was extinguished and limited damage to the basement was done. Power to the house was cut, and firefighters worked to ventilate the house that was full of smoke. The fire was under control within an hour. The damage caused is estimated at $25,000. No injuries were reported. DOWNERS GROVE PATCH Tree falls on Peoria home Peoria firefighters were called around 9 p.m. Thursday to a home on W. Millbrook Court, near Sterling Towers, for a rescue. Fire Battalion Chief Steve Rada says when crews arrived, they found a very large tree had fallen onto a house causing significant damage. The family of three living in the house escaped uninjured. Crews went inside the home and found part of a bedroom ceiling had collapsed onto a bed. Significant damage was done to the roof rafters and roof sheathing. A truck company gained access to the roof, finding a large hole with damage to the soffit area as well. Rada says a tarp was placed on the roof and the city's code enforcement department was on the scene advising the homeowner about repairing the house. Damage was estimated at $25,000. WMBD-AM 1470/FM 100.3 PEORIA Fire crews respond to car crashing into Mt. Zion Subway Mt. Zion Fire crews responded to a report of a car crashing into a Subway and catching fire Thursday morning. WAND-TV NBC 17 DECATUR St. Charles Fire Provides Free Smoke Detectors To Seniors The St. Charles Fire Department has partnered with the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance to provide free smoke detectors to older residents living in the city of St. Charles. According to fire officials, adults over the age of 65 years old are three times more likely to die in a house fire than younger adults, and the free smoke detector initiative is meant to protect local residents, according to a news release from the St. Charles Fire Department. The fire department is also offering home safety checks to seniors. This quick overview of the home will address life-safety education, such as fire safety, kitchen safety and places where falls are possible. There is also the vial of life program being offered which assists the fire department during emergency medical calls by having a pre-determined location for vital patient information in the event the patient is incapacitated. VIDEO: 80 people displaced after large fire breaks out at Arizona apartment complex Crews say 80 people will be displaced after huge apartment fire broke out in north Phoenix on Thursday evening. The flames broke out around 7 p.m. at a complex near Cave Creek Road and Cinnabar Avenue, north of Dunlap Avenue. One man had minor burns, firefighters said. Residents will be taken to temporary housing, but it's still unknown what sparked the fire. "It was a massive event for us out here in north Phoenix. We still do have crews actively fighting this blaze. It started in a single-story apartment complex and did spread to a two-story apartment complex next to it," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Evan Gammage. He said crews were able to stop the fire at the two-story complex, but it still sustained heavy damage. However, the single-story was deemed a complete loss. KTVK-TV 3 & KPHO-TV CBS 5 PHOENIX (AZ FAMILY) Massachusetts fire department working to restore vintage 1930's truck VIDEO: The Holyoke Fire Department is working to restore a piece of the city's history. "Firefighting is steeped in history and tradition and this is our, if you will, this is our connection to our forefathers that were here before us, that build the Holyoke Fire Department to what is today," said Holyoke Fire Capt. David Rex. If you've attended the Holyoke Saint Patrick's Day Parade or the tree lighting ceremony at city hall, then you may have noticed a vintage fire engine driving down city streets. Now, plans are underway to refurbish the 1930's Mack truck to its original condition. Rex told Western Mass News that, to him, the old fire truck symbolizes simpler times. "It was back in the day when the guys would hang in the sides and rise of the streets with the dalmatians," Rex added. WGGB-TV ABC 26 SPRINGFIELD Firefighters Show Fasting Diets Can Work for Shift Workers "Time-restricted" eating is a popular way to lose weight, and a new study suggests it can offer shift-workers a way to eat more healthfully. Time-restricted eating is a form of intermittent fasting, where people limit themselves to eating within a certain time window each day. Outside of that window, they swear off everything other than calorie-free drinks. Time restriction has become a popular weight-loss strategy, largely because it's simple. Instead of counting calories, people only have to watch the clock. And small studies have shown that narrow eating windows — six hours being a popular one — can help people shed some pounds. There is also some evidence of benefits other than weight loss, according to Dr. Pam Taub, a cardiologist and professor at the University of San Diego School of Medicine. US NEWS New challenge to firefighters during hurricanes: Electric vehicle fires Florida officials said firefighters working in Hurricane Ian damage zones are encountering a new problem that is proving challenging - electric vehicle fires from corroded batteries. Florida's Chief Financial Officer & State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis took to social media Thursday to show the response by North Collier Fire Rescue to an EV that caught fire in the middle of a busy roadway. "There's a ton of EVs disabled from Ian. As those batteries corrode, fires start. That's a new challenge that our firefighters haven't faced before. At least on this kind of scale," Patronis said. First responders did not report any injuries associated with the incident but said these fires can be difficult to extinguish. An official on scene can be heard saying in a video, "So, we've already put on 1,500 gallons of water on this, and it is still going. This shows how dangerous these fires are." FOX WEATHER Former Ohio Buckeye football player turned firefighter living a life of service For former running back Antonio Pittman, it's not the gridiron fueling his game anymore. He's traded in that sport for a spot with the Columbus Division of Fire. "It's a really, really, great job. I mean that from the bottom of my heart," Pittman said. ABC6/FOX 28 first spoke with Pittman about being a Columbus firefighter back in 2020, when he first started. Since then, he says he's achieved some of the goals he set out to do. "I've accomplished a lot, " Pittman said. Pittman's all about giving back and helping kids get on the right path. He says opportunities can change someone's life. So he and his girlfriend started a charity to help students. "We created Navigating Alternative Success which is named after one of her students who was tragically killed in 2019. With that we've created after school programs, tutoring, we provide resources, help them write letters for their college applications," Pittman said. WSYX-TV FOX 28 COLUMBUS PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
