1 dead, at least 28 injured after roof collapses at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere One person was killed and 28 others were injured after a full roof collapse at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois, on Friday evening, officials said. Approximately 260 people, including guests, performers and staff, were inside the venue for a metal rock concert at the time of the collapse, according to the event coordinator. Belvidere is in northern Illinois, approximately 14 miles outside the city of Rockford. Despite severe weather in the region, there were no reports of an "actual tornado" hitting the area, Belvidere Fire Chief Shawn Schadle said. Twenty-eight people were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals, Schadle said. Five had severe injuries; 18 had moderate injuries; and five had minor injuries. "Obviously there were probably other patients transported by personal vehicle," he added. WSIL-TV ABC 3 CARBONDALE Related: Governor Praises Belvidere's Response To Deadly Tornado, Pledges State Support For Recovery Gov. JB Pritzker visited The Apollo Theatre on Sunday where he praised concert-goers and first responders for their quick actions Friday after a tornado ripped the roof off the historic structure. Pritzker was in town to survey the damage and pledge the state's support to Belvidere's recovery efforts. His visit came one day after issuing a disaster proclamation, which paves the way for state funding and other resources to help residents and businesses affected by the powerful storms. The disaster proclamation includes Boone, Crawford, DuPage, Marion and Sangamon counties. "This is a strong community and it showed up for each other on Friday night," Pritzker said during a news conference in front of the 101-year-old theater. "The people of Illinois know that when others are hurting, neighbors show up for each other to help alleviate the suffering." WSIL-TV ABC 3 CARBONDALE Boone County Fire #2 could get their own ambulances, but it will cost residents more taxes Many people in Boone County could lose their ambulance service next year. Fire District #2 has a plan, but it means more in taxes. "An accident scene where there's internal bleeding or something like that, every minute counts," said Boone County resident Jim Dooley Boone County voters will decide on Tuesday if Fire District #2 will get their ambulance service. The referendum is for two, full-staffed ambulances with 24/7 service. Boone County Fire Protection District #2 Chief Brian Kunce said that it is a necessity. "If you look at this building and the fire apparatus, the community owns this," Kunce said. "This is their fire department, and they need to have their own ambulance that is dedicated to them." The cost is about $130 per year on a $100,000 house. WTVO-TV ABC 17 ROCKFORD PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Officials say massive fire at New York ambulance depot not suspicious Officials said Sunday that a five-alarm fire that ripped through an ambulance depot in Freeport was not considered suspicious. The massive fire broke out Saturday at an ambulance service building on Commercial Street and left a shell of structures and damages. Video captured plumes of black smoke billowing into the air. Officials said four first responders were injured, two of which were Freeport firefighters, and one was a Northwell medic. All four were treated with smoke inhalation and later released from the hospital. A third firefighter was treated at the scene for a minor facial injury. The Nassau Fire Marshal's Office confirmed to News 12 Long Island that the fire started in one of the ambulances and spread to others. Oxygen cylinders stored in the building and some acetylene tanks that are used for repairs further fueled the fire. NEWS 12 LONG ISLAND Related Video: More than a dozen ambulances destroyed in Freeport fire Fiery derailments renew Americans' focus on railroad safety Americans are renewing their focus on railroad safety after a string of recent derailments, especially two fiery ones involving hazardous chemicals in Ohio and Minnesota that prompted evacuations. Federal regulators and members of Congress are urging railroads to do more to prevent derailments. They want standards for the trackside detectors used to help identify equipment problems, more notice to states about hazardous chemicals they are hauling, and at least two people at the helm of freight trains. A Senate bill would toughen the penalty for safety violations to up to 1% of a railroad's annual operating income and set standards for the maximum length and weight of freight trains, which have grown significantly in recent years. Trains now routinely stretch beyond two miles (3 kilometers) long. KMTV CBS 3 OMAHA Texas fire department celebrates 150 years of peril and progress PHOTOS: Nasty green smoke filled the Waco Oriental Rug Company on Feb. 24, 1993, as a young Don Yeager and his fellow Waco firefighters entered the building, unaware of the peril that awaited them. With two years of experience, Yeager arrived with the first crew and paired with his captain to carry a hose into the building at 1101 Austin Ave. Another rookie firefighter teamed with an experienced firefighter to carry a second hose in. "My captain told me, ‘Don't let go of the hose,'" Yeager said. "We heard a crack overhead, as we pulled the hoses farther into the building," Yeager said. "Then came a boom as the ceiling fell in a V-shaped collapse." Along with other firefighters that day, Yeager dodged fate and lived to tell the tale. Now a retired battalion chief, he will join other former and current Waco firefighters and the public to celebrate 150 years of Waco Fire Department history, from horse-drawn to high-tech. WACO TRIBUNE-HERALD - METERED SITE ‘There is no universal school safety solution.' Nashville attack renews debate over how best to protect students Semiautomatic gunfire echoed in the hallways of The Covenant School, making a distinct noise teachers there would not soon forget. That was more than 14 months ago – before three children and three adults were gunned down on Monday in the stately stone school connected to Covenant Presbyterian Church, atop a tree-shrouded hill just south of downtown Nashville. The active shooter training session ended with live gunfire intended to familiarize school staff with real gunshots if they ever heard them. "Blanks don't sound the same. They just don't," said security consultant Brink Fidler, whose firm conducted the exercise. A bullet trap the trainers wheeled around captured the rounds of a semiautomatic pistol and an AR-15-style rifle loaded with real ammunition. When a handful of teachers heard the very first shot of Monday's rampage they initially mistook it for the din of ongoing construction at the building. CNN PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
